Only one proof sheet of hundred of the ninety cent value was printed with the centers inverted. The issued stamp bore marginal markings in carmine in two positions at the top of the sheet and in two positions at the foot. Inverted sheets had the black imprint appearing at the top over the carmine imprints in two positions. As a result, only two marginal imprint pieces appeared on this sheet. This stunning imprint and plate number multiple with the centers inverted is the finer of only two known. The other, which has smaller sheet selvage, is part of a unique set of all four bi-colored values in matching proof imprint and plate number blocks of eight, currently in the collection formed by the late Robert H. Cunliffe. As a result, the imprint and plate number block offered here is the only one available to Lincoln specialists. Certainly one of the key rarities for any Lincoln collection or for the connoisseur of inverted centers of the world. Accompanied by a 1995 PF certificate. (Image) $37,500.00

This stunning multiple is one of only two known unused blocks of six, the largest unused multiple recorded for the ninety cent 1869 Pictorial. The other known unused block of six was in the Caspary collection, currently residing in a private collection and is unlikely to make an appearance on the market for quite some time. A magnificent classic multiple that certainly ranks among the most important multiples in United States philately.Accompanied by a 1999 PF certificate. Illustrated in United States Postage Stamps of 1869 by Jon Rose (page 164). This unused multiple has excellent provenance being ex-Hind, Bechtel and Zoellner. In addition, this multiple is thought to be the one described in Brookman, Volume II (page 188) as also being ex-Ackerman, Sinkler and Ward. Cataloged as a block of four and a pair. There are only seven used blocks recorded, the largest being a block of six which, along with a block of four, are in the famous Hirzel collection housed in the Swiss PTT Museum. The block offered here from the Ainsworth collection is, by far, the only reasonably sound and well centered block of the five still remaining in private hands. York Steamship" c.d.s., deep rich colors, fairly well centered, stamp has been lifted for examination and hinged in place, small surface scrape and a minor thin spot, of little relevance given the famous status of this item, as it is the only known example of the Ninety Cent 1869 Pictorial used on piece; a highly important piece to the 1869 specialist or collector of used classic U.S. stamps and postal history, as this is essentially the only way one will ever obtain this high value in lieu of a complete cover, with the famous "Ice House" cover bearing this stamp, now recovered after being stolen nearly forty years ago, has been finally returned to family members of its original owner David Baker, and it is not known when, or if, it will ever be offered on the open market (and if it does we would suspect it would realize fifty to one hundred times the anticipated realization of the piece offered here); 1986 PF certificate; ex-Forster.
