1047 og 101 101, 90c Blue, F grill, flawlessly centered, deep luxuriant color and an excellent clarity of impression on wonderfully fresh paper, full clean original gum, lightly hinged,
an extremely fine gem in every regard. The 1868 Ninety Cent F gril#101, 90c Blue, "F" grill, flawlessly centered, deep luxuriant color and an excellent clarity of impression on wonderfully fresh paper, full clean original gum, lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem in every regard. The 1868 Ninety Cent "F" grill with original gum is an enormously rare and difficult stamp. To find one that is sound, with original gum and possessing truly extremely fine centering is an almost impossible task. In fact, we believe there are only two existing stamps that can be unequivocally described as extremely fine original gum examples - the magnificent copy offered here - and the example sold in the May 1986 sale of the James O. Hewitt collection by Steve Ivy Philatelic Auctions (which this describer wrote up). The latter stamp, to our knowledge, has not appeared on the auction market since that sale.A rare opportunity to acquire a stamp that is missing in virtually every mint collection, no matter how comprehensive, for example even the impressive collections formed by Messrs. Weisman, Zoellner, Lyons, Floyd and Lessin did not have a single example of an original gum Ninety Cent "F" Grill, let alone one in this outstanding quality. Accompanied by 1985, 1993 and 1999 PF certificates; ex-Morris, Golin. (Image) $14,500.00

It combines all of the physical characteristics that one hopes to find but are rarely encountered on the majority of the 1875 Re-Issues of the 1861-66 Issues. Its centering nears perfection, its margins are of extraordinary size and its color and impression would rival any proof. To top it all off, it possesses full clean original gum that has been only lightly hinged. Of the 451 sold of this value, this must surely rank as one of the finest existing examples.Accompanied by 1985 and 1998 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $15,500.00); one of only three stamps to have been awarded a 95 grade, with only two grading higher (98). In recent years the rarity of gem quality original gum examples of the 1875 Re-issues have become more appreciated and is reflected in increasingly impressive auction realizations they attract. When an original gum example appears at auction that boasts all of the physical attributes even the most demanding condition conscious collector could hope for, the competition is fierce and the final realizations quite impressive. The copy offered here is the perfect stamp for the collector assembling their set of 1861 Re-issues one select stamp at at time. Easily one of the very finest available of the 397 issued.Accompanied by 1971 and 2003 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $20,200.00); one of only three examples to have been assigned a 95 grade, with only two grading slightly higher (95J); ex-Chapin. While it is well known that the Twenty-Four and Thirty Cent values are particularly difficult to find in gem condition due to their characteristically small margins, what is not so well known is just how hard it is to find a Ninety Cent value in premium original gum condition. Its typically wider margins would suggest that finding one in premium condition would not be that difficult. And yet, nearly every major mint collection offered over the past ten years either did not have an example of this stamp in any condition, or if they did it invariably had either no gum or inferior centering. Important name collections such as Golin, Floyd, Lessin, McKinney - and even the recent sale of the Whitman collection - did not have an example that could truly be described as an extremely fine gem.Accompanied by 1970 and 2003 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (XF 90; SMQ $14,600.00); to confirm just how rare this stamp is in premium condition, this is the highest grade yet given to any Scott #111 by the PSE, and it is the sole copy to receive this grade; ex-Chapin.
