1875 SPECIAL PRINTINGS OF THE 1873 ISSUE

To find any one of the values with completely intact perforations is a challenge that requires patience, not to mention aggressive resolve when one finally makes an appearance on the auction market. The remarkable stamp offered here is one of the very few that exists with its perforations completely intact - in combination being completely free of any flaws. Of the approximately 40 to 45 reported examples of this rarity, no other copy comes close to the impressive overall physical attributes this stamp possesses. An incomparable condition rarity for the collector attempting to assemble the finest possible set of Bank Note Special Printings. Lightly signed by George B. Sloane and accompanied by 1956, 1976, 2002 and 2006 PF certificates (the latter graded XF 90). The PSE in its Population Reports shows they have only graded one example of Scott #167 and it graded only F-VF 75. The extreme rarity of this stamp in such outstanding condition is reflected in the SMQ valuation guide, as the highest grade they attempt to price is only a Fine 70 ($35,000.00), and that price bears little relation to the value of this unique stamp; ex-Engel, Lutwak, Zoellner and Floyd. The Six Cent 1875 Continental Bank Note Special Printing is one of the most difficult denominations to find in premium condition. That is what makes this stamp so remarkable, as it is the antithesis of what is normally encountered. Of the approximately 35 to 40 surviving copies, the vast majority are not only found off center, but with small flaws and with their perforations trimmed on at least one side. After a careful review of our records we are of the opinion that this stamp offered here from the Minervino collection is one of the top two finest Scott #170's in existence, with this stamp possessing the finer centering and larger sized margins between the two.Accompanied by 1948, 1992 and 2009 PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $58,500.00); ex-Floyd. To date, there have been only 22 different examples certified as genuine Scott #180's by the Philatelic Foundation. Plus, there is an uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. Of this minute population, only two other stamps are somewhat comparable in quality to the magnificent example offered here, both of which have slightly larger margins. However, neither can compare in terms of this stamp's remarkable overall condition, as its color could not be more vibrant, its impression more prooflike on brilliantly fresh paper, nor its perforations more intact.A rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest stamps in United States philately in outstanding condition. Lightly signed "SA" (Spencer Anderson) in pencil. Accompanied by a 2001 PF certificate, as well as a newly obtained 2009 PSE certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $140,000.00). The VF-XF 85 grade assigned by the PSE is the highest awarded to any Scott #180, being one of only two to have been so graded. (Image) $80,000.00
