360 |
#360, 4c Orange brown on bluish paper, fabulously wide margins all around and being incredibly well centered within them, sumptuously rich color and a sharp
prooflike impression on immaculate paper, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, superb. This incomparable gem is arguably the finest recorded example of the Four Cent Bluish Paper rarity. It is one of only two to have been graded XF 90 - by either the
Philatelic Foundation or Professional Stamp Experts - the highest grade yet awarded to any example of Scott #360. Its margins and centering are unlike virtually all other existing examples, as this value is notorious for being found off center and
with smaller margins than the other Bluish Paper denominations. This value, along with the Eight Cent from the series, were never intended to be issued to the public. Approximately 90 of each were released in an exchange with the Post Office
Department in Washington, D.C. to obtain other rarities for the nation's collection. While both the Four Cent and Eight Cent are known in similar quantities, it has been our experience that the Four Cent value is far more challenging to find both
well centered and with large margins. Even Mr. Minervino, the current owner of this remarkable copy, made an informal but extensive survey of all existing Four and Eight Cent Bluish Papers and it became obvious to him that the Four Cent was far more
difficult to locate in premium condition, this being one of the very few he felt could be truly be classified as an extremely fine gem.An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the great rarities in United States philately in the finest condition
imaginable. Lightly signed with H.F. Colman's handstamp (a well-known 20th century dealer and expert), as well as being accompanied by no less than three PF certificates dated 2000, 2002 and 2009 (the latter graded XF 90; SMQ $80,000.00);
