The exact date of issue of this rare coil waste stamp is unknown, as it was not recognized until 1936 and no plate numbers exist. It was at one time thought these were printed from plates 14012-13, which went to press in 1923. However, this postcard disproves that theory and supports Wallace Cleland's hypothesis that the first stamps of #544 came from plates 13948-49, which started on press December 5, 1921. Also of note is that this was the only coil waste cover missing from the "Alpha" collection of Washington-Franklin earliest document usages, sold by our firm in February, 2006.One of the most important covers for either the Washington-Franklin student or for the collector of earliest documented usages.
