440 O 3 3, 1851 12c Black on laid paper, a stunning example featuring especially deep rich color and an intense early impression, four margins that are exceptionally large, neatly
cancelled by a light strike of the seven-ring target postmark, extremely#3, 1851 12c Black on laid paper, a stunning example featuring especially deep rich color and an intense early impression, four margins that are exceptionally large, neatly cancelled by a light strike of the seven-ring target postmark, extremely fine. The extreme rarity of this high value is explained by a brief history of the production and usage of this stamp. A total of 51,000 stamps were printed, a mere 255 impressions of the 200 subject plate. By all standards for a regular issue stamp this is a miniscule printing. But the real rarity is seen in that in the short period from 1851-1854 only 1,450 were sold. The unsold remainders were then collected and destroyed. The apparent reason that so few were sold is that there were very few uses for this specific rate, and none of them were common destinations that saw much mail. The Twelve Penny Black of Canada has long been recognized as one the rarest and most desired stamps of the British Empire. Not only have few survived but obtaining quality collectable examples has proved even more difficult. The fragile laid paper was prone to damage and many existing copies have faults of various degrees leaving very few completely sound examples. As with all imperforates, obtaining nicely margined copies is a challenge. Therefore, this example ranks as one of the very finest copies extant, and could arguably be considered the finest single known. The only example we can find that compares is the spectacular copy we offered in the Dr. Choi-Lok Tang sale (September 30, 2006) that realized a record price of $205,000.00 (plus the buyer's premium). Accompanied by 1950 RPS, 1986 Holcombe and 2006 Green Foundation certificates; ex-Lees-Jones, Amundsen (Unitrade C$225,000.00). (Image) $75,000.00
