365 ogX 313 image#313, $5.00 Dark green, a truly extraordinary top margin imprint and plate number block of six, featuring incredibly deep and luxuriant color, rather well centered, with the top row being especially well centered, part o.g., some hinge sliver reinforcements, overall very fine. This magnificent plate block is one of only two plate number blocks of this value in existence. The other known plate block, which is in remarkably similar quality to the one offered here, was sold in the 1977 W. Parsons Todd sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, sale #517, lot #477). To our knowledge the Todd plate block has never appeared on the open market since that time. The last appearance of this showpiece was in our April 1998 sale of the remarkable plate block collection formed by Dr. J. Paul Wampler. It was the key highlight of his incomparable collection. At the time it realized $77,000.00 (including premium), against a catalog value of $50,000.00. The appearance of Dr. Wampler's collection rekindled interest in the plate block market, and since that time the realizations on important plate blocks have dramatically increased due to the number of new serious buyers in this historically popular field of United States philately. With only two 1903 Five Dollar Green plate blocks known, this is not only the rarest 20th century regularly issued plate block, but it ranks as one of the greatest plate blocks in all of U.S. philately. Undercataloged in our opinion, when one considers that there are four known plate blocks (of six or eight) of the Five Dollar Columbian, and yet its catalog value is $190,000.00 (for a hinged plate of six). In fact, one such plate block of six recently realized $165,000.00 (including premium), despite having a tear in one of the stamps, in a New York auction. Accompanied by a 1977 PF certificate; ex-Enos, Wampler. (Image) 82,500.00

368 og 322 image#322, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 12 vert., an extraordinarily well centered pair, rich carmine color distinctive only to genuine examples, unusually clean full o.g. that has been lightly hinged, extremely fine. This exceedingly rare coil was issued for the specific purpose of being used by private vending machine companies in their newly developed vending devices. Only a very limited number were ever issued and a remarkably small number still exist today. The most recent survey of certified examples was completed in 1980 by Martin A. Armstrong for his book "Washington-Franklins 1908-1921". At that time he noted that only 167 had been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. It is our opinion that less than one quarter of this total exist in sound condition and with their perforations not cutting the design. And of this very small minority only a few can compare to the quality of the pair offered here. An infrequent opportunity to acquire one of the most important coil rarities of the United States in outstanding quality. Signed Ward and accompanied by 1956 and 2000 PF certificates.
