4 O 1c image#1c, 5c Red orange, a magnificent used example of this distinctive color, featuring huge margins all around, showing a bit of the next stamp at top and traces of the adjoining stamp's frame line at bottom, gloriously rich and unmistakable Red orange color on very fresh paper still retaining much of its original bluing, centrally postmarked with a blue "5" handstamp which has been overstruck (re-rated) with a blue "10" handstamp cancel, an extremely fine gem in the most optimal condition possible and believed to be the finest known; any example of this, the rarest of all of the Five Cent 1847 colors, is a terribly elusive stamp, and when found they typically have small faults, very few exist sound, and only a tiny fraction of these are found with four full margins; obviously undercataloged when one considers that this example realized $20,700.00 (including premium) when last sold at auction in 1996 (Christie's 10/22/96, lot #4) when it cataloged $3,850.00; 1996 PF certificate. 1851-1856 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
17 O 5, 5A image#5, 5A, 1c Blue, Ty. I-Ib combination pair, positions 7-8R1E, horizontal pair, full to large margins all around (just barely touching at bottom left), wonderfully bright early shade and a highly detailed impression on fresh paper, each stamp cancelled with neat and unobtrusive strikes of blue circular grid cancels, very fine and exceedingly choice. An enormously rare and highly desirable combination pair containing one of the most important and sought-after rarities in all of United States philately. One position, the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent Imperforate displays. It is believed that less than 100 examples of this rarity still exist. The Type Ib, which shows the design nearly complete, comes from only six positions on plate one early, two of which (positions 6R1E and 8R1E) are the best examples of the type. Very few combination pairs such as this exist. In fact, according to our records, this combination pair is one of only eight known and is among the finest of this miniscule number. Any four margin example of the imperforate Type I stamp is a great rarity, as only a tiny fraction of the existing population are found with this crucial condition factor. Fewer still are found completely free of faults. The pair offered here has a long and storied history, having been a highlight of some of the most famous collections ever formed. Past auction descriptions have mentioned a couple of trivial flaws, including a tiny surface scuff at the top right of the Type I (merely an inconsequential paper production irregularity, in our opinion). However, experts and students of the Imperforate One Cent Blues have recently re-examined this pair, believing that past descriptions have been overly fussy considering not only this pair's rarity, but its overall quality in relation to the few other existing pairs as well. In fact, this pair was re-submitted to the Philatelic Foundation in 1996 to obtain an updated opinion as to its condition. Their "genuine" opinion, mentioning no flaws, confirmed what others have long believed. Recent auction realizations for single examples of the Type I have been most impressive, even for examples with faults, which have ranged between $60,000.00 to $70,000.00. The few sound examples that have appeared on the market have reached a high of $80,000.00. No pair of this quality has been on the market for years, with the exception of the Dr. Vernon Morris pair in the 1997 sale of his collection (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., sale #793). His pair, which was described as having "faint surface scrapes in the edge of the top margin" sold for $62,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, before the realizations of Type I stamps increased dramatically. Accompanied by a 1996 PF certificate as mentioned above. ex-Caspary, Ishikawa and Klein. (Image) 62,500.00

19 O 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 97L4, the "curl on shoulder" variety, an incomparable used example of this very rare stamp, possessing fabulously wide margins all around, including a partial sheet margin at bottom, with stunning color that is in an intense dark shade, plus its impression could not be more deeply etched on bright paper, showing the Type Ia design characteristics perfectly, neat central town c.d.s., a superb gem for the finest collection; unquestionably among the very finest examples of the imperforate Type Ia stamps extant; the extreme rarity of Type Ia stamps is due to the fact that only 18 of the 20 positions on the bottom row of plate 4 sheets produced this type, which shows a full design at bottom; 1971 and 1991 PF certificates.
