227 c 114 var. image#114 var., 3c Ultramarine, on gray paper, fine centering, deep luxuriant color on distinctive grayish paper with a decidedly pinkish cast, tied to neat canary cover to Guildhall, Vt. by interesting cut cork postmark, "Boston, Mass./May 13 (1870)" c.d.s. alongside, very fine; this little known, but certainly rare variety, is one of the most fascinating of all the known varieties found on the Three Cent 1869 Pictorial, and according to an accompanying article by Richard J. Niezabitowski which appeared in the 1869 Times, he records only eleven known covers with this variety, although the cover offered here was not included in his census; 1993 PF certificate.
