Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
301 og 166 image#166, 90c Rose carmine, a phenomenal mint example whose equal has not been on the auction market in years, as this stamp is in a condition that is almost unheard of for this rare and challenging Bank Note, possessing incredible centering amid enormously large margins all around, but just as impressive is this stamp's fantastic overall brilliance and freshness, with absolutely radiant color and a deeply etched impression on bright crisp paper, full clean o.g., very lightly hinged, superb; quite likely the finest original gum Ninety Cent Continental Bank Note in existence; eclipsing in quality the mint examples found in any of the great collections sold over the past few years (including Weisman, Zoellner, Keenan, Golin and Lyons); 1989 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the bottom left stamp. Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
302 og 167 image#167, 1c Ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, a magnificent example of this especially difficult Special Printing rarity, possessing remarkable physical qualities, including being extraordinarily well centered, intense shade and a sharp prooflike impression on bright paper, scissor separated as almost always, however this stamp is one of the few that exists with its perforations completely intact, extremely fine gem; to our knowledge this is the finest quality example extant of the approximately 35 to 40 known; a remarkable condition rarity for the collector attempting to assemble the finest possible set of Special Printings; signed George B. Sloane and accompanied by 1956 and 1976 PF certificates; ex-Engel, Lutwak and Zoellner where it realized $22,000.00 (including premium) in 1998. (Image) 10,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $22,000.00

(Image) 4,750.00

Closed or SOLD for $5,750.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
304 og 169 image#169, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, a highly select example of this immensely rare stamp of which no more than 40 are believed to exist, with this particular copy being one of the very few of this number which survived with its perforations completely intact (most have perforations clipped off on at least one side), fresh and bright, with sumptuously rich color and impression, nicely centered, a very fine and choice example of a stamp that is missing in even the most advanced collections; 1948 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-Sheriff. 305 og 170 image#170, 6c Dull rose special printing, without gum as issued, a fabulous quality example of this important special printing rarity and, according to our extensive research of nearly all the great name sales of the past, we are quite certain that this is one of the top two finest existing examples among the approximately 35 to 40 surviving copies, as this stamp possesses physical qualities that are almost impossible to find on the Hard Paper Special Printings, including being perfectly centered amid lavishly large margins, and just as impressive is the fact that its perforations are fully intact all around, rich color on bright paper, an extremely fine gem for the finest collection; the only other example comparable in quality to this magnificent stamp was found in the Larry Lyons collection, which was our privilege to sell in January 2000, Mr. Lyons' copy which was almost the exact mate to this stamp, sold for a record $31,900.00 (including premium); 1948 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-Anderson. (Image) 11,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $19,000.00

306 og 171 image#171, 7c Reddish vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, a superlative example of this rare stamp, incredibly well centered amid uncommonly large margins, plus its color is brilliantly fresh and its impression crisp on bright paper, even its perforations are fully intact which is a very rare occurrence, extremely fine in every regard; easily one of the finest of the approximately 50 Seven Cent Hard Paper Special Printings thought to still exist; 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 2,850.00

Closed or SOLD for $5,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
307 og 172 image#172, 10c Pale brown special printing, without gum as issued, a magnificent quality example of the most difficult value of the entire Hard Paper Special Printings series to find in any kind of acceptable quality, with this particular copy being the remarkable exception to the rule, as it features incredibly choice centering within very large margins, plus we can recall no other example whose perforations are fully intact as those found on this stamp, wonderfully fresh overall, with deep luxuriant color and a razor-sharp impression on bright crisp paper, an extremely fine gem in every respect; quite likely the finest example of the approximately 40 examples of the Ten Cent Hard Paper Special Printings believed to exist; a spectacular stamp that is essential to the collector assembling a gem set of Special Printings; 1947 and 1989 PF certificates. (Image) 11,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $19,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
308 og 173 image#173, 12c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, the magnificent "Caspary" right sheet-margin example, widely regarded not only as the finest example of the Twelve Cent Hard Paper Special Printing in existence, but also considered one of the finest of all the Special Printings in terms of its overall quality, possessing spectacular centering amid margins that are unimaginably huge for any stamp, let alone a notoriously difficult Special Printing, wonderfully bright and fresh, with sumptuously rich color and a prooflike impression on immaculate paper, its perforations are completely intact and non-scissor separated (also an unheard of trait), top right corner perf. tip crease at top right so insignificant as to be not even mentioned on either accompanying certificate, still superb; one of the great condition rarities in United States philately; 1957 and 1991 PF certificates; ex-Caspary (being the right stamp from a horizontal pair). (Image) 4,250.00

309 og 174 image#174, 15c Bright orange special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily handsome example of this especially difficult value, wonderfully well centered within oversized margins that are most uncharacteristic of the issue and of this denomination in particular, strong radiant color on bright fresh paper, extremely fine; among the finest centered of the less than 40 examples thought to still exist; 1991 and 1998 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Weisman. (Image) 11,500.00

310 og 175 image#175, 24c Dull purple special printing, without gum as issued, a phenomenal example whose overall condition leaves no doubt that this is the finest Twenty Four Cent Hard Paper Special Printing in existence, being a bottom sheet-margin copy with absolutely perfect centering amid the most immense margins possible, its color is incredibly rich and its impression is remarkably detailed on bright fresh paper, intact and virtually even perforations all around, superb; an incomparable gem that ranks as one of the finest quality Special Printings in existence; this remarkable stamp was last offered at auction in 1993 (Ivy, Shreve & Mader Philatelic Auctions, Inc., October 26, 1993) where it attracted considerable bidder attention, resulting in a record realization of $11,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium; 1993 PF certificate. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a 1992 PF certificate. (Image) 8,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $10,500.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
312 og 177 image#177, 90c Violet carmine special printing, without gum as issued, a magnificent quality example of this tremendously rare stamp, being unquestionably the finest in existence, featuring physical attributes that are almost impossible to find on the Hard Paper Special Printings, phenomenally well centered amid incredibly large margins, with radiantly rich color and an impression that would rival any proof on bright white paper, and quite remarkably this stamp boasts full and intact perforations which occurs on only a tiny number of the surviving examples, a superb gem destined to realize a record price; it is estimated that only 40 to 45 examples still exist of the Ninety Cent value; signed E. Stern and accompanied by 1950 and 1989 PF certificates; ex-Ward. (Image) 10,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $25,000.00

(Image) 750.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,300.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
316 O 179 image#179, 5c Blue, enormously large margins all around and being virtually perfectly centered within them, rich luxuriant color, neat duplex cancel, an extremely fine and striking jumbo; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 20.00

317 og 179c image#179c, 5c Blue, Continental "J" grill, select mint example of this rare stamp, quite well centered, extraordinarily fresh, deep luxuriant color, full o.g. showing the grill impression well (which does not break paper as is so often the case), very fine; 1998 PF certificate. 318 og 180 image#180, 2c Carmine vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, intense "fiery" color which is characteristic only to this stamp, strong impression on bright fresh paper, rather well centered, very fine. An incredibly fresh and handsome example of this great United States rarity. There have been only 21 different examples certified as genuine Two Cent Hard Paper Special Printings by the Philatelic Foundation. Plus, there is an uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. An exciting and infrequent opportunity to acquire this important rarity which is missing in even the most advanced collections of United States stamps. Signed J.M. Bartels and accompanied by 1953, 1969 and 1998 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Hale and Weisman. (Image) 29,000.00

Closed or SOLD for $17,500.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
319 og 181 image#181, 5c Bright blue special printing, without gum as issued, particularly well centered and margined for this, especially when compared to the few other known examples, luxuriously rich color and a strong detailed impression, full complete perforations all around which have not been scissor separated as found on several, a very fine and choice stamp. An incredibly rare stamp of which only nine examples have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. There is a tenth example recorded in the New York Public Library collection. The Floyd example is one of the three finest examples, and the finest to appear on the auction market in several years. The last #181 to be sold at auction was in our January 2000 sale of the Larry Lyons collection. His example possesses similarly choice centering, however it did have a small thin spot and faint toning. Despite these flaws, the Lyons example realized $47,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. Obviously, one would expect the Floyd example, being in select quality, to realize well in excess of this amount. A very rare opportunity for the serious collector who wishes to obtain one of the most important rarities in all of United States philately, and certainly one of the most infrequently offered. Signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1968 and 1984 PF certificates; ex-"Ambassador" Collection, Hewitt and "Concord" Collection. (Image) 48,000.00
