1908 Experimental Coils
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
542 og 316 image#316, 1c Blue green coil, perf. 12 horiz., pair, incredibly well centered, with extraordinarily large margins all around, rich color in the dark green shade characteristic only to genuine examples, crisp impression as well on bright paper, full original gum, extremely fine. This magnificent pair of this important experimental coil rarity is, without question, the finest of the mere twelve pairs that have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. There is also one certified single. One of the greatest rarities in 20th century philately. An exciting opportunity for the collector who has been searching literally for a lifetime to fill this almost impossible space in their album. A thorough search of the greatest collections of United States stamps ever offered at auction reveals that nearly all were lacking this coil rarity. This pair is the front cover illustration on Martin A. Armstrong's book United States Coil Issues 1908-38. Signed lightly in pencil "N S Co" (Nassau Stamp Company) on bottom stamp and accompanied by 1967 and 1994 PF certificates. (Image) 99,999.99

Closed or SOLD for $150,000.00
Closing..Oct-24, 12:00 PM
543 og 317 image#317, 5c Blue coil, perf. 12 horiz., an incredibly fresh mint pair of this experimental coil rarity of which fewer than ninety pairs are recorded, in a much more brilliant state of preservation than the vast majority, with strikingly intense color and a crisp detailed impression on considerably brighter paper than usual, marvelously well centered as well, with large margins, pristine o.g. with just the barest perceptible trace of hinging, so faint that this pair has been offered in other major auctions as never hinged, a very fine and choice example of this important rarity; 1992 PF and 2001 PSE certificates. (Image) 12,500.00

Closed or SOLD for $16,000.00
Closing..Oct-24, 12:00 PM
544 og 318 image#318, 1c Blue green coil, perf. 12 vert., a spectacular quality mint pair of this coil rarity, possessing centering and margins unlike any other we have seen, as each stamp is incredibly well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, additionally this pair features intensely rich color and a highly detailed impression on crisp paper, full clean o.g. that has been lightly hinged, extremely fine; clearly one of the finest 1908 One Cent Blue Green horizontal coil pairs extant; 1988 PF certificate. I and II, a select group of six mint singles, each being a different shade and/or type, includes #319, 319b, 319c, 319f, 319i and 319j, all well centered and margined, rich colors, o.g., n.h., extremely fine; three better stamps accompanied by 1996-97 PF certificates. 546 ogbl 319d image#319d, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate horizontally, mint block of four containing two such error pairs, being one of only two recorded blocks of four of this enormously rare error, quite well centered, deep luxuriant color, o.g., minor h.r. at bottom, very fine; according to Johl, the only examples of this error are from a block of 25, imperforate horizontally, that was found at the Washington, D.C. post office; one of the great error rarities of the 20th century and a highly important item for the 1902-03 Regular issue specialist; 1959 and 1998 PF certificates. (Image) as two pairs 12,000.00+

Closed or SOLD for $10,500.00
Closing..Oct-24, 12:00 PM
547 ogbl 319e image#319e, 2c Carmine, Ty. I, vertical pair, imperforate between, with San Francisco roulettes added, in a mint block of ten (2 x 5) which displays two such error pairs, showing a progression of the imperforate row between the top two stamps, followed by two rows of unpunched or blind perforations, and then a final normal row, natural s.e. at right, o.g., fine; the imperforate between error of this stamp is extremely rare, but an even more unusual and fascinating variety of this error is the "San Francisco" roulette, as the Postmaster in San Francisco received a shipment of stamps from Washington in which a few of the sheets contained the imperforate between error, being rather thrifty and enterprising the Postmaster rouletted the rows where the error had occurred and then simply sold them as normal postage; the block offered here is, to our knowledge, one of only two known multiples of this incredibly rare error bearing the "San Francisco" roulettes, this being the only one which shows the full progression of the error; signed "S.A." (Spencer Anderson) and accompanied by a 1997 PF certificate; ex-Agris. (Image) 5,000-7,500+

Closed or SOLD for $6,500.00

552 og 322 image#322, 2c Carmine coil, perf. 12 vert., an incredibly well centered mint pair, possessing near perfect centering, rich carmine color distinctive only to genuine examples, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine. This exceedingly rare coil was issued for the specific purpose of being used by private vending machine companies in their newly developed vending devices. Only a very limited number of stamps were ever issued and a remarkably small number still exist today. The most recent survey of certified examples was completed in 1980 by Martin A. Armstrong for his book "Washington-Franklins 1908-1921". At that time he noted that only 167 had been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. It is our opinion that less than one quarter of this total exist in sound condition and with their perforations not cutting the design. Of this very small minority, only a few can compare to the quality of the pair offered here. A gem pair of one of the most important coil rarities of the United States - easily one of the finest in existence. Accompanied by a 1985 PF certificate; ex-Zoellner. (Image) 10,000.00
