1861 First Design "August" Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
119 og 55 image#55, 1c Indigo "August", full original gum, very lightly hinged, exceptionally fresh, with intense characteristic "August" color and impression, quite well centered when compared to all other existing copies (all known examples are centered slightly into the top perforations), but unlike most others, this stamp has fully intact perforations, very fine and exceedingly choice. It is believed that a total of 24 copies exist of the One Cent First Design or so-called "August" Issue. Of this total, two are cancelled and another is housed in the New York Public Library collection, leaving only 21 uncancelled copies available to collectors. More than half of the available examples are found either with faults, without gum or both. In fact, there are only eight that exist which are both completely sound and still retain their original gum, with the example offered here being among the finest of this elite group. A rare opportunity to acquire a magnificent original gum example of one of the rarest stamps in United States philately. Signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by both 1992 PF and PSE certificates; ex-Isleham and Weisman (where it realized $29,700.00 in our May 1998 sale of the Eliot H. Weisman collection), (Image) 20,000.00
