Paul Wampler collection; one of the many extraordinary highlights from the Floyd collection of postal stationery; ex-White and "Michigan" Collection (UPSS #299). (Image) 40,000.00

1336 og U140A image#U140A, 2c Red brown on orange, mint cut square, 32x37mm, exceptionally fresh, insignificant and faint corner bend at bottom right which is mentioned for strict accuracy, very fine; one of the great rarities in U.S. postal stationery as only three or four cut squares are thought to exist; for years this famous cut square has been sold and identified in major auctions (including the Lilly sale in 1967-68 and our "Michigan" Collection sale in June of 1998, where this cut square was purchased by Mr. Floyd) as the so-called "Red brown" shade of Scott #U145 (2c Vermilion on orange), even the accompanying 1960 PF certificate identifies this as #U145, however the latest thinking among knowledgeable students, the Philatelic Foundation and the editors of the Scott Catalogue is that the few existing cut squares in the red brown/brown red shades on orange should be classified under the Scott identification #U140A, while the few cut squares that are in a true vermilion shade will remain under the Scott identification #U145; it should be noted that with this change in identification criteria for each Scott number involved, the number of known cut squares has not increased, rather the existing population will be split between the two, actually increasing their already rare status; ex-Barkhausen, Lilly and "Michigan" Collection.
