1930 O RG36 image#RG36, $5.00 Dark blue, with "Silver Tax" typewritten overprint, a fresh example of this incredibly rare stamp, quite likely the only known example of this value, deep rich color, nicely centered, neat manuscript date cancel, slight paper penetration from "I" of "SILVER" overprint, very fine; the following is a recent history of this important stamp: being unpriced in Scott, this stamp was acquired by Larry Lyons in our April 1998 sale of the Dr. J. Paul Wampler collection where it realized $6,600.00 (including premium) against significant bidder competition, subsequently, in our January 2000 sale of Mr. Lyon's collection, Mr. Floyd acquired it, again after considerable bidder interest, for $8,800.00 (including premium) when it was priced in Scott at $6,500.00 (based upon Wampler realization); in the most recent edition of the Scott catalog, the editors have chosen not to price it, presumably due to its unique status; an essential stamp for the collector who is attempting to complete his Silver Tax issues; 1998 PF and PSE certificates; ex-Joyce, Wampler and Lyons. 1934 O RG56 image#RG56, $60.00 Brown, handstamped "Series 1940" in blue, a superb used example of this tremendously rare stamp, featuring flawless centering amid extravagantly large margins, strong rich color on bright fresh paper, very light and unobtrusive violet oval handstamp cancels, extremely fine. This stamp is not only one of the key Silver Tax rarities, but is also one of the rarest stamps in all of United States philately, with only four recorded examples - all of which are used. In the past twenty years, three of the four examples have appeared in auction. In 1980, one not quite as well centered as the Floyd copy was sold as part of the important collection of United States revenues formed by George T. Turner (Daniel F. Kelleher Co., Inc. - sale #546), and it is the only one of the four to be accompanied by a PF certificate. A second example appeared eleven years later in the massive 1991 Joyce sale. Both the Joyce and Floyd examples are perfectly centered. This third copy appeared a few years later in a Michael E. Aldrich sale, where Larry Lyons acquired it for $13,000.00, after fierce bidder competition. In the sale of Mr. Lyons' collection by this firm in January 2000, Mr. Floyd was the ultimate winning bidder, again against considerable competition, for $22,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. An exciting opportunity for the serious revenue collector, Silver Tax specialist or for the collector of Lincoln related items who is seeking a highlight for an award-winning exhibit. Accompanied by a 1994 PSE certificate (the only one certified by the PSE). (Image) 15,000.00
