Sanitary Fair
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1543 og WV15 image#WV15, Stamford, Ct., 15c Pale brown, an immensely rare mint example of this stamp, whose great rarity is largely due to the Fair's more remote location and very short three day run, large margins all around, full o.g., small thin spot, otherwise very fine; there are only thirteen recorded examples of the Stamford Soldier's Fair stamp, nine of which are unused and four used, of the nine unused, seven of these form a reconstructed multiple that is highly unlikely to ever be broken up, leaving this single, and one other, as the only two available unused examples; a key Sanitary Fair stamp whose catalog value does not accurately reflect either this stamp's rarity, nor past auction realizations, in fact, this example in an auction appearance in 1996 realized $8,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium.
