1613 O 14a image#14a, 1856 4c Black on rose carmine, intialled "E.D.W.", a magnificent vertical pair of this famous primitive classic stamp, pos. 3-4, being the only recorded multiple in this color, exceptionally bright and well preserved color especially when one considers the age of the stamp and the climatic conditions to which it was exposed, sharp black printing and neat initials, cancelled by two strikes of the "Demerara/SP 19/1856" double arc d.s., margins range from large to just touching in a couple places, the few usual surface scuffs associated with the delicate surface colored paper, light horizontal crease between the stamps, overall in a very fine state of conservation and of great visual appeal, fine appearance; according to Townsend, there were four different types with the sheet composed of a vertical strip of four (hence the lack of existence of any horizontal pairs); when one considers the relative rarity of the colored papers, the rose carmine paper for which dated cancellations have been documented between Sept.-Nov., 1856, is twice as rare as the preceding magenta surfaced paper, and of the five recorded pairs of the 4 cents this is the only one on rose carmine colored paper; a celebrated showpiece; ex-Ferrary and Townsend (S.G. #25; £17,000+).
