Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
341 og 201 image#201, 30c Greenish black special printing, without gum as issued, a seldom seen sound example of this very rare special printing, rich unmistakable greenish black color and a strong impression on bright paper, centered a bit to bottom, but completely free of any flaws which plague so many existing examples, fine; approximately 40 examples are thought to exist of the Thirty Cent Soft Paper Special Printing; signed E. Stern and accompanied by a 1982 PF certificate. (Image) 12,500.00

SOLD for $9,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
342 og 202 image#202, 90c Dull carmine special printing, without gum as issued, warm rich special printing color on bright paper, quite well centered and margined, particularly when compared to the small existing population, a very fine and choice example of this important rarity, one of the most challenging of all the Special Printings to find in premium quality; among the finest of the approximately 40 examples thought to still exist; 1946 PF certificate. (Image) 14,000.00

SOLD for $10,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
343 og 203 image#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily vivid and intense color that is characteristic only to genuine Special Printings, attractively centered, completely free of the faults that affect several existing examples, very fine. A marvelously fresh and bright example of this immensely rare stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller Collection housed in the New York Public Library). An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the great United States rarities. Accompanied by a 1948 PF certificate. (Image) 26,000.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
344 og 204 image#204, 5c Deep blue special printing, without gum as issued, exceptionally large and wonderfully well balanced margins all around, gloriously rich color and a crisp detailed impression on brilliantly fresh paper, extremely fine. A spectacular quality example of one of the great rarities in U.S. philately. We are aware of only 18 confirmed examples, 17 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus there is an additional copy housed in the Miller collection at the New York Public Library. A stamp which combines all of the essential elements - color, centering, margins, and overall freshness - to be considered a true gem. The last two sound examples of the Five Cent Soft Paper Special Printing, both of which were sold by Shreves, give prospective bidders an excellent insight as to the true market value of this exciting rarity. The Larry Lyons collection contained an attractive example (centered slightly to bottom) and realized a then record $87,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, in January 2000. Then in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection a new record was established for a Scott #204, when Mr. Floyd's jumbo-margined copy realized $140,000.00, plus the buyer's premium. There is little doubt that the example offered here from the Lessin collection ranks second only to the ex-Floyd copy and we fully expect it to realize a price commensurate with status as one of the greatest condition rarities in United States philately. Signed "SA" (Spencer Anderson) and "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson). Also accompanied by a photocopy of a 1983 PF certificate, as well as a 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 45,000.00

SOLD for $150,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
345 og 205C image#205C, 5c Gray brown special printing, without gum as issued, wonderfully well centered within large margins, rich luxuriant color in the distinctive gray brown shade attributed only to the Special Printings, prooflike impression on fresh paper, choice very fine. A marvelous example of this incredibly rare stamp. A total of only 22 different copies have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine Five Cent Garfield Special Printings. Because of the extreme rarity of this stamp, very few collectors will ever have a chance to own a copy of this elusive Special Printing, and fewer still can acquire one in such outstanding quality. The last two completely sound examples to appear at auction were both sold by Shreves: Larry Lyons collection, January 2000, realizing $42,500.00 (plus the 10% buyer's premium); William S. Floyd collection, October 2001, realizing $52,500.00 (plus the 10% buyer's premium). The handsome Lessin example is quite comparable to both the ex-Lyons and ex-Floyd copies. Signed "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a 1961 PF certificate; ex-T. Charlton Henry and Kharasch. (Image) 28,500.00

SOLD for $35,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
346 og 211B image#211B, 2c Pale red brown special printing, flawless centering within unusually large margins, brilliantly fresh, deep rich color, full o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; a gem example of this Special Printing; signed several times including E. Stern and accompanied by a 1980 PF certificate. (Image) 500.00

SOLD for $425.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
347 og 211D image#211D, 4c Deep blue green special printing, without gum as issued, especially intense color and a deeply etched impression, very fine. There are only 26 recorded examples of this immensely rare stamp, 25 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. The number known exactly coincides with Post Office records which indicate 26 copies of the Four Cent Special Printing were sold. Therefore, it is highly unlikely any further copies will ever be found that will be certified by the PF. A handsome example of one of the rarest of all the Special Printings. Once part of one of the two known blocks, both of which were broken up decades ago. Accompanied by a 1954 for a block of four, this being the top right stamp, plus a 1976 PF certificate as a single. ex-"Ambassador" collection, Lutwak and Greenblatt. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $19,000.00
