517 O 389 image#389, 3c Deep violet, Ty. I, "Orangeburg Coil", perf. 12 vert., an attractive and seldom seen sound example of this rare coil, which was issued specifically for use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Co. to mail samples to doctors, centered a bit to top as are many of the known examples, completely free of any of the usual faults, intensely rich color and a deeply etched impression, neat usual wavy line machine cancel, nearly very fine for this major 20th century rarity; any example of the Three Cent "Orangeburg" coil is a rarity, however to find one fault free is an especially difficult challenge, as many were slightly damaged due to the contents of the doctor's sample envelope being a bit bulky, often resulting in creases; 1994 PF certificate.
