United States Stamps continued...

1861 First Design "August" Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
101 og 58 image#58 (or #62B), 10c Dark green "August", an incredibly fresh and desirable mint example, possessing a remarkable overall brilliance and crispness, with gloriously rich color and a razor-sharp impression, while centered just a bit to bottom, this stamp is far better centered and margined than usual, pristine full o.g., lightly hinged, very fine; a marvelously choice example of a stamp that is terribly challenging to find in such premium condition and still retaining its full original gum; 1971 PF certificate. (Image) 6,750.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
102 ng 58 image#58 (or #62B), 10c Dark green "August", unused, magnificently well centered and margined for this stamp which is well known for being quite narrowly spaced on the plate, being one of the few examples we have seen, whether mint, unused, or used, whose perforations do not impinge on any portion of the design, deep luxuriant color and a strong impression on bright paper, extremely fine; an especially rare stamp in this premium condition; 1965 PF certificate. (Image) 3,250.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
103 og 59 image#59, 12c Black "August", part original gum, strikingly intense color and impression on bright paper, without any of the faults which affect the majority of known examples, centered a bit to top as often found, very fine for this great rarity. According to the Philatelic Foundation's records, there are only 15 stamps which have been certified as genuine Twelve Cent "August" issues (one of which has been cancelled "New" in manuscript). There is an additional uncertified example housed in the New York Public Library's collection. Of the 15 stamps available to collectors, only six stamps are completely sound, as is the example offered here. The immense rarity of this stamp is underscored by the fact that only one or two Twelve Cent "August" issues make an appearance at auction in a given year - if at all. Signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a 1976 PF certificate; ex-Lutwak. (Image) 40,000.00

SOLD for $33,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
104 og 60 image#60, 24c Dark violet "August", a marvelous quality mint example, being in an overall quality which few others can compare to, possessing exceptional centering for this value and with large margins, gorgeous rich and unmistakable "August" color and a crisp impression, full o.g., extremely fine; a beautiful original gum Twenty Four Cent "August" issue; 1955 PF certificate. (Image) 6,500.00

SOLD for $9,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
105 og 61 image#61, 30c Red orange "August", full clean original gum, fabulously bright and crisp, featuring spectacular eye-arresting color in a very deep shade, wonderfully well centered and margined, with its perforations clearing the design all around, which is exceedingly difficult to find on this tightly spaced stamp, completely free of any of the flaws which affect most known examples, extremely fine. There are only 28 certified examples of Scott #61 found in the Philatelic Foundation records, plus there is an additional uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. One common characteristic of the Thirty Cent "August" is the presence of creasing due to the brittle nature of the paper. In many cases this creasing is severe and is an accepted condition factor for serious collectors attempting to assemble a complete set of "August" issues. To find one without this characteristic creasing is extraordinary. To then find one still retaining its full original gum and possessing outstanding centering is a virtually unique opportunity. A superlative example of this important rarity. Ranking as one of the very finest Thirty Cent "August" issues in existence. Accompanied by a 1970 PF certificate. (Image) 17,500.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
106 og 62 image#62, 90c Dull blue "August", part original gum, virtually perfect centering within large margins, incredibly fresh and crisp, absolutely stunning prooflike color and a razor-sharp impression on bright paper, extremely fine. To our knowledge there are only 21 examples of Scott #62 in existence, 20 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation (one of these is cancelled). The only uncertified example is found in the New York Public Library collection, presumably never to be made available to the collecting public. Of the 20 certified examples, the copy offered here is clearly among the very finest, combining all of the necessary elements to be considered a true gem. One of the great condition rarities of this, or any other, sale. In our opinion the catalog value of this exciting stamp will prove to be irrelevant when trying to determine its true market value. For example, the extremely fine copy sold in our October 2001 sale of the magnificent William S. Floyd collection realized $60,500.00 (including premium), despite the fact that it had no gum. Accompanied by a 1971 PF certificate; ex-Col. Green. (Image) 22,500.00

SOLD for $43,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
107 O 62B image#62B, 10c Dark green "August", lovely quality used example of this always difficult stamp, wonderfully well centered and margined, especially considering how poorly centered and tightly margined this stamp can come, deep luxuriant color and a well incised impression, very light and unobtrusive double ring San Francisco town c.d.s., extremely fine; 1988 PF certificate. (Image) 950.00

SOLD for $1,200.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM

(Image) 20,000.00

SOLD for $1,500.00
