Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
198 og 294a image#294a, 1c Pan-American, Center Inverted, virtually perfectly centered within uncharacteristically large margins, extraordinarily fresh overall, with particularly deep rich colors on bright paper, unusually even and intact perforations all around, full o.g., lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem; this popular and rare error is almost never encountered in such outstanding condition; easily one of the finest mint examples available and one of the finest we have ever had the pleasure to offer in our auctions; 1996 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $10,500.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
199 og 295a image#295a, 2c Pan-American, Center Inverted, perfectly centered amid extraordinarily large margins, deep rich colors and strong impressions on unusually bright paper, full clean original gum that is not at all disturbed like the vast majority of known examples, in fact it is in the finest state of preservation we have ever encountered, lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem in every regard. An incomparable mint example of this important 20th century error rarity, whose overall condition in terms of centering, margins, color and preservation of original gum places it among the very finest in existence. There were originally 200 of these inverts that passed through the Post Office, but the number of examples which still survive today has yet to be determined with certainty, as the Datz catalog estimates a total of 150 unused singles, a mint intact block of four and 3 to 5 used singles. However, there are other estimates by knowledgeable philatelists which place the number of surviving copies at less than half the Datz estimate. In any case, the immense rarity of this popular stamp is unquestioned. An extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of the great rarities of United States philately in the finest attainable condition. The catalog value quoted in Scott is for copies with slightly disturbed gum and, of course, those in premium quality with full original gum such as this command substantial premiums over the quoted catalog price. Accompanied by 1968 (submitted by Raymond H. Weill Co.), 1982 and 1995 PF certificates. (Image) 42,500.00

SOLD for $40,000.00
