Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
222 nh 188 image#188, 10c Brown, with secret mark, a phenomenal mint example in a condition that is almost unheard of on this surprisingly difficult and truly rare Bank Note, possessing outstanding centering amid lavishly large margins, but even more impressive is this stamp's fantastic overall brilliance and freshness, with absolutely stunning color in an intense shade, plus its impression is truly prooflike on pristine paper, immaculate o.g., never hinged, an extremely fine gem in every regard; quite likely the finest mint never hinged #188 in existence; the rarity of this stamp in choice never hinged condition cannot be overemphasized as, unlike other values from this same Bank Note series which can sometimes be found never hinged, the Ten Cent value is almost never seen offered; in fact, we can find no major "name" collection sold recently or in the distant past that had a never hinged single in the condition that even remotely compares to the remarkable stamp offered here; 2000 PF certificate. (Image) for hinged 1,750.00

SOLD for $11,000.00

1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
225 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, a stunning example of this tremendously rare stamp, featuring the finest centering and largest margins found on any of the One Cent Soft Paper Special Printings, possessing huge margins which are most uncharacteristic of this value and being incredibly well centered within them, sumptuously rich color on fresh paper, there is just the tiniest trace of a thin speck at top left and is of little significance considering this stamp's extraordinary physical attributes, still extremely fine; there are probably no more than 30 to 40 copies of this stamp still in existence, the vast majority of which possess rather poor centering and often with faults, the example offered here is probably among no more than a half dozen examples which can be classified with very fine or better centering, virtually all of which have varying degrees of faults; clear 1957 PF certificate; ex-Cole. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $16,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
226 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, an exceptionally handsome example of this truly rare special printing, being far better centered and margined than most of the existing population, plus its color is strikingly intense and its impression especially strong, very fine and choice; among the finest examples of the approximately 50 to 60 copies still believed to exist; signed "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson), as well as being accompanied by 1975 and 2001 PF certificates; ex-Klein. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $10,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
227 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, particularly well centered within extravagantly large margins, deep luxuriant color and a strong impression on fresh paper, couple of small thin spots which in no way detract from this stamp's very fine and choice appearance; 1985 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $7,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
228 og 195 image#195, 6c Dull rose special printing, without gum as issued, a handsome and brilliantly fresh example of this very rare and challenging value to find in premium condition, being quite attractively centered, with warm and rich color on especially bright paper, very fine; one of the few existing sound and well centered examples, with no more than 30 copies believed to still exist and, to our knowledge, there are no known perfectly centered examples, in fact few exist with centering and margins as pleasing as those found on the example offered here; 1976 and 1990 PF certificates; ex-Lilly. (Image) 20,000.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
229 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, strikingly intense color, fairly well centered, thin spot at top causing a few short perfs., vertical crease, fine appearance for this elusive stamp; probably less than 100 copies exist of this value; 1974 PF certificate. (Image) 3,500.00

SOLD for $1,150.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
230 og 197 image#197, 10c Deep brown special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily well centered amid exceptionally large margins, gloriously rich color which is particularly fresh and luxuriant, fully intact perforations all around, small thin spot from hinge removal, extremely fine appearance; an incredibly rare stamp of which less than 35 still exist, and a large number of the surviving copies have thin spots which the Soft Paper Special Printings are susceptible to; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $14,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
231 og 198 image#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, magnificently well centered within large well balanced margins all around, deep luxuriant color and a strong impression, small thin spot as is so often found on the Soft Paper Special Printings, otherwise extremely fine; easily one of the finest centered and margined examples available among the approximately 75 copies thought to still exist; signed Ward and accompanied by a 1971 PF certificate; ex-Sheriff. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $5,750.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM

(Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $17,000.00

233 og 200 image#200, 24c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, an exceptionally well centered and margined example of this value, with rich luxuriant color and impression on fresh paper, very fine and quite handsome; probably less than 75 examples exist of this, and few are as choice as this copy; signed Stern and accompanied by a 1980 PF certificate. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $5,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
234 og 201 image#201, 30c Greenish black special printing, without gum as issued, a fabulous quality example of this very rare stamp, being in a condition which very few Special Printings exist, incredibly well centered amid lavishly large margins unequalled by virtually all other known copies, rich unmistakable greenish black color and strong impression on bright paper, an extremely fine gem in all respects; approximately 40 examples are thought to exist of the Thirty Cent Soft Paper Special Printing and this ranks as one of the finest, if not the finest, known; 1953 and 1982 PF certificates; ex-Hewitt. (Image) 12,500.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
235 og 202 image#202, 90c Dull carmine special printing, without gum as issued, fresh example of this important United States rarity, warm rich and distinctive color, centered just a bit to right as are virtually all known copies, couple of faint thin specks and a mild diagonal crease, none of which affect this stamp's very fine appearance; less than 40 copies exist of this value; 1986 PF certificate. (Image) 15,000.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
236 og 203 image#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, marvelously well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, wonderfully vivid and intense color that is characteristic only to the genuine Special Printings, completely free of the faults that affect several existing examples, extremely fine. A exceptional quality example of this immensely rare stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller collection housed in the New York Public Library). Upon comparison to other known examples, it is evident that the Ballman example ranks among the very finest available due to its outstanding fault-free condition and its exceptional centering. In fact, we estimate that only nine examples are found in sound condition with centering grading very fine or better. The last comparable quality example to appear at auction was the copy found in the William S. Floyd collection, which this firm sold in October 2001. His example, not quite as well centered as this one, realized $52,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the great United States rarities in outstanding condition. Signed by E. Stern and Ward, as well as being accompanied by 1938 APS and 1991 PF certificates. (Image) 40,000.00

SOLD for $45,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
237 og 204 image#204, 5c Deep blue special printing, without gum as issued, near perfect centering within large margins, strikingly intense color and a crisp detailed impression on bright fresh paper, extremely fine. A magnificent quality example of one of the great rarities in U.S. philately. We are aware of only 18 confirmed examples, 17 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus there is an additional copy housed in the Miller collection in the New York Public Library. Of the 18 known examples, this copy, without question, ranks among the very finest available. As evidenced by recent auction realizations of other examples of this rarity, the current catalog value of Scott #204 bears little relationship to its actual market value. In fact, since our January 2000 sale of the Larry Lyons collection, the three sound examples of the Five Cent Soft Paper Special Printing which have appeared on the auction market have realized no less than $87,500.00 (Lyons copy) to a record high of $150,000.00 (Joseph E. Lessin collection). We understand that the new catalog value in the soon to be released 2003 Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers will be considerably higher and will more accurately reflect current market trends. This extraordinary stamp is accompanied by 1956 and 1988 PF certificates, as well as a 1991 PSE certificate; ex-Caspary, "Ambassador" Collection, Cole and Weisman. (Image) 45,000.00

SOLD for $80,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
238 og 211D image#211D, 4c Deep blue green special printing, without gum as issued, especially intense color and a deeply etched impression, well centered, very fine. There are only 26 recorded examples of this immensely rare stamp, 25 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. The number known exactly coincides with Post Office records which indicate 26 copies of the Four Cent Special Printing were sold. Therefore, it is highly unlikely any further copies will ever be found that will be certified by the PF. A handsome example of one of the rarest of all the Special Printings. Lightly signed by both E. Stern and Ward, as well as being accompanied by 1946, 1987 and 1989 PF certificates; ex-Weill Brothers. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $28,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
