630 ng 594 image#594, 1c Green coil waste, an enormously rare unused example of this stamp, being one of only 21 unused examples recorded, while centered a bit to right as are virtually all known copies, this particular stamp is far better centered than most, as its perforations clear the design all around (a very rare occurrence), deep luxuriant color, with perforated initials "W" in large "C" (a security measure by large companies or mailing firms to ensure employees do not use on personal mail), still with traces of original gum, just a tiny thin spot, otherwise far more fault free than the great majority of known examples, very fine for this; this stamp ranks as one of the great unused rarities in United States philately, and of the 21 recorded, ten have no gum at all, eight only have small traces of original gum (having been peeled off of post cards before use), and all but six have varying degrees of faults, with this being one of the least affected; 1958 PF certificate; the Scott catalog notes "No. 594 is valued without gum; both unused and used are valued with perforations just touching frameline on one side;" ex-Hewitt. (Image) 19,000.00

SOLD for $16,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 05:30 PM

Closing..Oct-18, 05:30 PM
632 O 595 image#595, 2c Carmine coil waste, an incomparable top sheet-margin used example of this truly scarce and terribly challenging stamp, being in a condition unlike any other we have ever seen, possessing not only perfect centering within uncharacteristically large margins, but its color is incredibly intense and fiery, which must be seen in person to fully appreciate, beautifully postmarked with the lightest possible town c.d.s., extremely fine gem; we doubt a finer used example exists; 2002 PF certificate. (Image) 325.00

SOLD for $1,050.00
Closing..Oct-18, 05:30 PM
633 O 596 image#596, 1c Green, rotary press perforated 11, used, bold "Kansas City/MO." precancel, incredibly well centered for this challenging stamp, with its perforations clearing the design all around, deep luxuriant color in a dark shade, completely free of the flaws which affect virtually every known copy, very fine and exceedingly choice. This magnificent example of one of the greatest rarities in United States philately is one of only thirteen recorded - all of which are used. There is no known unused copy. Of the thirteen recorded, eight have the Kansas City, Mo. Bureau precancel as found on this stamp. Due to this stamp's remarkable centering and, most importantly, its completely fault-free state of preservation, there is little doubt that it ranks as one of the finest, if not the finest, Scott #596's in existence. It is certainly the finest quality example to appear on the auction market in many years. As with other important rarities, past auction realizations give potential bidders a useful insight as to what similar stamps appearing at auction are likely to realize. In the case of Scott #596, there have been a few examples to appear at auction in the last couple of years that should aid in determining the value of the exciting example offered here from the Ballman collection. In our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection there was a machine cancelled copy, whose centering was clear of the design, but had a faint corner crease and a minute tear. It sold for $93,500.00 (including premium). In the May 2002 "Rarities of the World" sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.) there was a seldom seen sound example with a Kansas City, Mo. precancel and it realized $104,500.00. Comparing the Ballman example to the one sold in the Siegel Rarities sale, while both are exceptional stamps due to their fault-free status, the Ballman copy is actually the better centered of the two. The Siegel example has its perforations just cutting the left frameline, while the design on Ballman example is clear of the perforations on all four sides. A stamp destined for placement in the finest collection of United States stamps. Accompanied by both a 1993 PSE certificate, as well as a 1994 PF certificate. (Image) for fine 65,000.00

SOLD for $80,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 05:30 PM
634 O 613 image#613, 2c Harding, rotary press perforated 11, quite well centered for this, particularly when compared to other existing examples, with its perforations just clear of the design all around (a rare occurrence), intensely rich color, very light and unobtrusive wavy line machine postmark, small and minor diagonal crease at top right, otherwise nearly very fine for this. The Two Cent Harding rotary press perforated 11 stamp is one of the most sought-after rarities in United States philately. There are 39 confirmed singles and two pairs known - all of which are used. This example from the Ballman collection is one from the first original find ever made of this rarity. This fantastic find was discovered by an astute employee, Leslie Lewis, of the famous Stanley Gibbons stamp firm in 1938. A handsome and eye-appealing example of this important 20th century stamp. Accompanied by a clear 1956 PF certificate, as well as an updated 1992 PF certificate mentioning the small corner crease. (Image) for fine 35,000.00
