855 og PR48 image#PR48, $1.92 Dark brown special printing, without gum as issued, a marvelously choice example of this immensely rare newspaper special printing which in our opinion, after diligent research, ranks among the finest extant of the mere 41 copies issued, being wonderfully well centered within much larger margins than usual, gorgeous rich luxuriant color on bright paper, without any of the flaws which plague so many of these special printings, very fine; an exciting opportunity to acquire a stamp that may not make an appearance at auction for many years to come; 1975 PF certificate. 856 og PR49 image#PR49, $3.00 Vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, magnificently fresh and bright, rich vivid color distinctive only to the special printing, strong detailed impression on immaculate paper, marvelously well centered and margined, completely intact perforations all around, extremely fine. This stunning stamp is, without question, the finest extant of the scant twenty copies issued. With so few in existence, this stamp is not only an immense newspaper rarity, but ranks as one of the most important rarities in all of United States philately. One of the most exciting stamps we have ever had the pleasure to offer in our auctions, this being the second time we have presented this stamp to our clientele. Its first appearance was in our May 1998 sale of the collection formed by Eliot H. Weisman. It realized a then record price of $19,800.00 against a catalog value of $10,000.00. Now cataloging $21,500.00, and with a much more vibrant current marketplace among collectors seeking newspaper rarities, we fully expect that this stamp will once again realize a record price far exceeding its current catalog value. Signed Ward and accompanied by 1960 and 1992 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Engel, "Connoisseur" Collection and Weisman. (Image) 21,500.00

SOLD for $40,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 05:30 PM
857 og PR50 image#PR50, $6.00 Ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, exceptionally fresh, with bright vibrant color distinctive only to the special printing, crisp detailed impression as well, fully intact perforations all around, nearly very fine for this. Only fourteen examples of the 1875 Six Dollar Newspaper Special Printing were issued. This being only the second example we have seen in over 30+ years conducting philatelic auctions. An exciting opportunity to acquire not only one of the key newspaper rarities, but one of the most important stamps in United States philately. With only fourteen examples issued (and we assume that it is doubtful all fourteen still exist), this stamp's rarity is one par with several of the high profile Bank Note Special Printing rarities - i.e. Scott #180 (21 known), #181 (9 known), #203 (20 known), #204 (18 known), #205C (22 known) and #211D (26 known) - all of which catalog considerably more. Accompanied by a 1995 PSE certificate. (Image) 27,500.00
