364 OOc 231 #231, 2c Columbian railroad postal history collection, attractively written up on pages for exhibition, this collection documents some rare and scarce markings of the rail postal system using covers franked with the popular 2c Columbian, this issue comes into use just as the railway post office service was reaching its height, so it is appropriate to use this issue to show the markings, this collection contains over 130 covers and starts appropriately with an attractive all-over Columbian Exposition illustrated cover, the other covers are collected for their railway markings, and this is only added to by the numerous interesting corner cards and advertisements, we note 35 covers with illustrated advertising, this collection concentrates on scarcer and more elusive marking including some that were applied in transit including receiving markings, some of which are in scarce colors as red, violet and green, there are scarce distribution center markings as "Chicago & St. Louis R.P.O./Chicago Dis.", also transfer clerk markings including a rarely seen rimless variety, some show mail detention messages such as very rare "Chicago, Ill./Received/Mail Delayed/E/Train Late" duplex (only two reported examples), also includes "Fast Mail" designations at this time when speed of service was increasingly important, one interesting marking of which there are only a few known is "Chi. City, Chi. & Cinc./F. Mail" with an outer rim that reads "Mail Delayed/Train Late", we also note the discovery examples of "Roanoke, Va/Transit" which was previously unlisted, two frames of this exhibit concentrate on scare "R.P.O." cancels of railroads of very short length, often less than 100 miles, some of the scarcer we note include "Alton Bay & Dover/R.P.O." (28 miles), "Belfast & Burnham/R.P.O." (34 miles), "Sparta & Viroque/R.P.O." and "Selma & McPhersen/R.P.O. (both 36 miles) and "Greenville & Laurens/R.P.O." (37 miles), plus others, numerous markings are of different size and configuration than listed or not previously listed at all, there is far too much to list everything specifically, but color photocopies are available for examination by interested bidders; also includes over 50 stamps with various obliterators used on railroad cancels, some indicating directions, etc., condition varies as would be expected for covers of this period and with markings that are extremely scarce, but large portion are fine-very fine and attractive.
