1546 S S.G. #271S imageS.G. #271S, 1948 5/- Royal Wedding, perforated "Specimen" in the type with "Specimen" in a half circle that was used on large size stamps of the British Commonwealth, a well centered stamp with good color, without gum, very fine. British specimens have been issued for many purposes over the years. In the twentieth century the primary purpose was distribution to the U.P.U., however this ended in March of 1948 prior to the 1948 Royal Wedding series. The last general perforated "Specimen" issue for the Commonwealth was the 1946 Victory issue. This single example is the only known example from Fiji of the 1948 Royal Wedding and we have never seen another from any other colony. Stamp Collection Balances
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1559 ogObl S.G. #1/103c S.G. #1/103c, Substantial and valuable nineteenth century balance of the mint and used collection, this collection was being formed for exhibition so some is mounted on pages in padded leather Godden album, but because a large portion of the material in this period has so many overprint, shade and perforation varieties, most are found identified on stock pages in preparation for mounting, starts with three "Fiji Times Express" issues including a 1p Black and 6p Black on rose quadrille paper and a 6p Black on rose laid batonne, each faulty and/or trimmed close as is often the case with these scarce stamps, the early government issues of 1871-77 are one of the significant sections of this collection starting with both mint and used complete of the six different King Cakobau issues, the first issues as a Crown Colony include ten different with Gothic and Roman "VR" surcharges including all four of the red and black "2d" surcharges on the 6c on 3p Green values, used (S.G. #22-24), there is a total of 45 mint and used with the monogram "VR" overprints plus a mint overprinted pair of the 1p Blue on laid paper imperforate vertically, other varieties of this issue include used examples of the 1p Blue with blank top left corner on both wove and laid paper, the last section with the monogram "VR" design and the new Piroque designs are significant for the many perforation varieties and shades that are present as collected by Stanley Gibbons, these are collected mint and used and in multiples up to a mint block of twelve of 2p Yellow Green (S.G. #40), in all there is a total of over 325 nineteenth century stamps in this collection, early issues have condition problems that are par for the course for this country, early used stamps often have the faults that are simply the result of the sharp cancelling devices that were used and are to be expected, yet there are also fine-very fine stamps present particularly in the later period where the mint have o.g.; a collection well worth examining because of the large amount of material that is so difficult to acquire; includes 40 BPA or RPS certificates (Scott #1/58).
