396 nh 1789B image#1789B, 15c John Paul Jones, perforated 12, a pristine top left corner sheet-margin example of this important modern rarity, well centered, unblemished o.g., n.h., extremely fine; the Fifteen Cent John Paul Jones commemorative was issued in 1979, printed by the J.W. Fergusson & Sons Co., and first perforated 12 x 12 by the American Bank Note Company, however the horizontal pins broke after only one day's use and were replaced by perf. 11 pins (creating the 11 x 12 perf. variety) and later the perf. 12 vertical perforating pins were replaced by 11 pins (resulting in the 11 x 11 variety); to date, only four sheets of 50 each (200 stamps) have been reported of the perforated 12 variety, making this one of the rarest stamps in United States philately; the example offered here comes from position one from a sheet first discovered in 1989 and has remained intact until very recently; the decision by the Scott catalog editors in 2001 to elevate this stamp to major catalog number status has caught many serious collectors off guard, resulting in an empty album space in many otherwise nearly complete 20th century collections; photocopy of a 1989 PF certificate for the original intact pane of fifty.
