485 c 2 var. image#2 var., without "Canal Zone" overprint, single stamp tied by "La Boca/Canal Zone/ Jul 3 1904" duplex on cover to Colon, with July 5 receiver, fine; accompanied by a handwritten Sept. 30, 1904 letter from J.C. Perry to H.F. Colman which reads: "Dear Mr. Colman: The 2 - 5c - without surcharge Canal Zone, are the errors that occurred in two sheets - unfortunately my agent did not notice the error & broke the pair - I want 3.00 each for them - I have no others - Truly yours J.C. Perry"; Perry was responsible for finding many of the first issue errors and sending many of the known covers (including first day covers). This cover is addressed to his agent at the American Consulate in Colon. While this is not in the traditional format of the overprint omitted error (pair, with and without overprint), of which only four examples are known, we feel confident that this is a legitimate usage of the "without overprint" error; ex-Helme (CZSG #2 var.).
