1861 First Design "August" Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
121 og 60 image#60, 24c Dark violet "August", virtually perfectly centered within far larger margins than typically encountered, gorgeous rich and distinctive color, superbly detailed impression as well on bright paper, part o.g., extremely fine; an especially rare and desirable stamp in this gem quality; among the finest known Twenty Four Cent "August" issues; 1966 PF certificate; ex-Lilly and Chapin. (Image) 7,500.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
122 og 61 image#61, 30c Red orange "August", full clean original gum, fabulously bright and crisp, featuring spectacular eye-arresting color in a very deep shade, wonderfully well centered and margined, with its perforations clearing the design all around, which is exceedingly difficult to find on this tightly spaced stamp, completely free of any of the flaws which affect most known examples, extremely fine. There are only 28 certified examples of Scott #61 found in the Philatelic Foundation records, plus there is an additional uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. One common characteristic of the Thirty Cent "August" is the presence of creasing due to the brittle nature of the paper. In many cases this creasing is severe and is an accepted condition factor for serious collectors attempting to assemble a complete set of "August" issues. To find one without this characteristic creasing is extraordinary. To then find one still retaining its full original gum and possessing outstanding centering is a virtually unique opportunity. A magnificent example of this important rarity. Ranking as one of the very finest Thirty Cent "August" issues in existence. Accompanied by a 1993 PF certificate; ex-Col. Green. (Image) 19,000.00

SOLD for $27,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
123 og 62a image#62a, 90c Blue "August" imperforate, unused, without gum as always found, four lavishly large margins, rich characteristic color and a sharp impression, extremely fine; a gem example of this scarce and seldom offered imperforate; 1968 PF certificate; ex-Bingham and Chapin. (Image) 2,750.00

SOLD for $1,800.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
124 og 62B image#62B, 10c Dark green "August", an incredibly fresh and desirable mint example, possessing an exceptional overall brilliance and crispness, with sumptuously rich color and a razor-sharp impression, while centered just a bit to right, this stamp is far better centered and margined than usual, full o.g., very fine; a choice example of a stamp that is terribly difficult to find both sound and still retaining its original gum; 1960 and 2002 PF certificates. (Image) 7,250.00

SOLD for $4,750.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
125 O 62B image#62B, 10c Dark green "August", a gorgeous quality used example of this always difficult stamp, wonderfully well centered and margined, with its perforations completely clear of the design all around (a very rare occurrence), deep luxuriant color and a well incised impression, light strike of a pretty red town c.d.s., extremely fine gem; 1981 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 1,080.00

SOLD for $1,700.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM

Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
135 ngPB 65c image#65c, 3c Rose, imperforate, bottom margin partial imprint and plate "No. 11" block of six of this rare imperforate variety, large margins all around, unused, without gum, with the usual light mottled toning on paper which is found on all examples and is actually characteristic of genuine imperforate examples rather than similar items which are more properly classified as essays or experimental papers, extremely fine; extraordinarily rare as a plate number multiple, Chapin's census records four plate number multiples from plate 11, and only a total of seven plate number blocks in various shades or plate numbers, this being listing #231; 1961 PF certificate; ex-Simon and Chapin.
