266 og S.G. #28a imageS.G. #28a, 1883 Half of 1p Orange revenue with provisional "Postage." overprint, unsevered pair, an extremely rare mint example, being a full stamp with two strikes of the overprint, designed to be bisected for 1/2p stamps, bright orange color, typical centering for these very tightly spaced stamps, centered just into the design at bottom and left, o.g., fine; these provisional overprints were placed on the 1p Orange revenue stamp to fill a shortage of 1/2p and 1p postage stamps, being placed once on a whole stamp for 1p and twice on a stamp to be bisected producing two 1/2p stamps, of course an unsevered stamp could be used to pay 1p and was not infrequently done, however unsevered stamps that have survived unused are extremely rare, it is believed that less than five examples are known (Scott #14a; $4,000.00). (Image) £4,250

SOLD for $5,750.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

(Image) £1,200

SOLD for $1,000.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

(Image) £1,200

(Image) £1,100

SOLD for $1,000.00

Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
275 O S.G. #29 var. imageS.G. #29 var., 1883 Half of 1p Orange revenue with provisional "Postage" overprint, overprint reading northwest to southeast, top right diagonal bisect very neatly tied to small piece of newspaper paying the internal 1/2p rate, tied by blue "Grenada/JA 20 83" c.d.s., overprint is clear and distinct, very fine; a most unusual variety as this handstamp applied both "Postage" overprints tete-beche to each stamp in one operation, but normally oriented so the top left half of the stamp was used rather than the top right, this variety occurs by rotating the handstamp 45 degrees, in essence equivalent to an inverted overprint, unlisted in the catalogs; this is the discovery copy of this variety and the only one that we are aware of, nicely used in a commercial manner; 1977 RPS certificate (Scott #15 var.). (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $2,500.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
276 c S.G. #29 imageS.G. #29, 1883 half of 1p Orange revenue with provisional "Postage" overprint, neatly tied to unsealed envelope to Thomas Finlagson & Co. in Trinidad by small blue "Grenada/JA 20 83" c.d.s. with index letter "A", trivial pinhole at bottom right and slight overall aging to the paper of the envelope, otherwise very fine; this contained prices current and the 1/2p franking paid the interisland printed matter rate, which all went to Britain for sea passage, in February Grenada began to charge postage due to such usages, which were often philatelic, to recover the fee for its postal services even though this was against UPU regulations; scarce early usage (Scott #16). (Image) Est. 200-300

SOLD for $450.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
277 c S.G. #29 imageS.G. #29, 1883 half of 1p Orange revenue with provisional "Postage" overprint, attractive bisect tied to small cover to Trinidad by small February Grenada c.d.s. in blue, matching blue "T" postage due handstamp with "5 cts" marked in blue crayon, very fine cover paying the printed matter rate; Grenada marked it due in an attempt to recover their postal fee despite the fact this was against UPU regulations (Scott #16). 1883 Manuscript Overprints
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
278 O image1883 1p Orange revenue with black Gouyave manuscript provisional "postage" overprint, type with lower case "p" in "postage" and in the rare horizontal format, used with February 17 cancel, minor faults including pulled perf. at top and a couple of tiny pinholes, fine and extremely rare; the vast majority of the Gouyave manuscript overprints, as well as the few known examples from other towns, were written diagonally on the stamp from bottom left to top right, the horizontal marking was done only at the very beginning of the two or three week period between mid-February and early March when these provisionals were used, all are rare with even the most specialized collections of Grenada having none or only a single example, the Walker collection is astounding in having seven used examples from this town plus one on the unique cover, this is the only example in horizontal format and the only example we have seen (Scott #19 var.). (Image) £2,250+

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

(Image) £2,250

SOLD for $7,250.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
