322 c S.G. #42 imageS.G. #42, 1888 "4d/Postage" provisional surcharge, 5mm spacing, on 2/- Orange revenue, a bright and quite well centered single tied to cover to Jersey in the Channel Islands by "Grenada/D/18/ AU 8" of the parish post office at Grenville (apparently this post office only had two digit "8" date plugs, so they could only put one in the year date), additional strike at left, Grenada transit on the reverse along with Jersey backstamp, minor adherence on the reverse, otherwise very fine; ex-Messenger and Hackmey. (Scott #32). (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $425.00

323 c S.G. #40, 42 imageS.G. #42, 1888 "4d/Postage" provisional surcharge, 5mm spacing, on 2/- Orange revenue, tied to registered envelope to England by scarce "Grenada/A/ 15 SP 88" c.d.s. of the parish post office at Gouyave, similar strike on the reverse, additional 1p Carmine right sheet-margin pair (S.G. #40) tied by a Grenada c.d.s. of the General Post Office at St. George's as well as the "R" in oval and red London registry oval, it is not clear where the 1p stamps and registry marking were applied, but the most logical explanation is that the stamps were applied at Gouyave and not cancelled, so cancelled in transit, backstamped, backflap torn in opening with a couple of minute tears carrying over to the front, otherwise a scarce and intriguing cover; ex-Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #30, 32a). (Image) Est. 500-750

326 c S.G. #43, 45 imageS.G. #43, 45, 1889 "Half/Penny/Postage" and "Postage/and/Revenue/1d." provisional surcharges on 2/- Orange revenues, two singles of the latter, all three with typical centering of the basic revenue stamps, tied to cover to England by "Grenada/JA 15/91" c.d.s., backstamped Colchester, very fine; the British Imperial rate of 2 1/2p to any participating British Colony had just gone into effect on January 1st of 1891, we know the General Post Office was short of the 1p value and may well have been short of the 1/2p value as well as De La Rue made a shipment of this value on January 20th 1891, an attractive usage of two provisional issues (Scott #31, 35). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

(Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,050.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

337 c S.G. #44 var. imageS.G. #44 var., 1890 "1d./Revenue" and "Postage/and" provisional surcharge on 2/- Orange revenue, "Postage" inserted by hand, a most interesting and unusual unlisted variety, the catalogs do not make it clear that the surcharge identified as type 18 in Stanley Gibbons was really a two step overprint, 2/- Orange revenues were originally surcharged "1d./Revenue" to make provisional revenue stamps, then these revenue stamps had an additional overprint "Postage/and" applied at top to make 1p provisional postage stamps, this unique variety occured because this last overprint was applied high so that "Postage" did not appear on the stamp for which it was intended, either it was put on the stamp above at bottom, or in the case of the bottom row "Postage" did not appear at all, on this stamp from the bottom row an enterprising postal employee applied a similar "Postage" handstamp (slightly different type style, ink of different intensity) to the top of the stamp, had he not done this the stamp would have been a variety with "Postage" omitted due to an overprint shift; this variety is tied to a 2p Gray registry envelope (H&G #C1a; 152x96mm) to England, along with "Postage/and/Revenue/1d." provisional surcharges on 2/- Orange revenue and 8p Grey brown (S.G. #45-46), plus a 3p Mauve and green revenue, which was accepted as postage, all tied by "Grenada/JU 04/91" c.d.s., backstamped Bristol, cover very fine and attractive; this variety has been known for a long time and correctly noted as early as 1957, it remained unlisted and is quite likely the only known example of a marvelous provisional variety; ex-Gilbert-Lodge and Pilkington (Scott #44 var. 34 var, 35-36). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,700.00
