Postal Stationery
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
440 c H&G #1 imageH&G #1, 1881 1p Light blue on buff postal card, an extremely rare used example of this first postal card, with two strikes of blue "Grenada/NO 01 82" small c.d.s. with index letter "A", posted to Trinidad with small similar receiving c.d.s. on the front, quite well preserved for these thin, fragile cards, few tone flecks and stain from string that was in contact with the front, otherwise very fine; there were only 500 issued of each of the first issue postal cards, most of which were sold to stamp dealers and not used, explaining the rarity of the used cards, this 1p rate was for local use or up to 300 sea miles away, which was the case to Trinidad, this is the only known correctly used example as it was intended (a used example with additional 1/2p adhesive to London is known), a great postal stationery rarity of any country; ex-Messenger and Hackmey.
