673 c S.G. #11b, 11b var. imageS.G. #11b, 11b var., 1917 2a on 1Pi Black and violet, perf. 13 1/2, variety "In British" overprint beneath "Baghdad", a most unusual and inexplicable variety along with a normal example of this stamp, both are exceptionally well centered, tied to OHMS cover to Captain W.J. Allen in Baghdad by "Baghdad/7 Sep 17" c.d.s., light circular violet censor handstamp at left, extremely fine and handsome cover; the "In British" overprint that is clearly beneath the "Baghdad" at top is exactly the inscription that appears vertically at the left of all of these issues, this is the only recorded example of this variety, not listed or mentioned by Stanley Gibbons, but certainly a very important variety and especially nice found on cover, a must for a specialized collection of these interesting issues; 1982 BPA certificate (Scott #N12, N12 var.). (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000

SOLD for $4,500.00

(Image) Est. 3,000-4,000
