747 nh S.G. #216a image#S.G. #151a, 1964 6p "H.M.S. Glasgow" error of vignette, select mint example, being the unique plate number single, brilliantly fresh, well centered, pristine o.g., n.h., very fine and quite choice; one of the most famous and impressive errors of the 20th century; according to a note in the Stanley Gibbons catalog "there have been seventeen reports of stamps showing the error, although it is believed that some of these may refer to the same example;" of this very small population, not all have remained never hinged as this particular copy has, plus this example is the sole existing plate number single; from the Dempsey Prappas collection; (Scott #151a; $15,000.00). 748 c imageThe 1914 Battle of the Falkland Islands exhibition collection, a fascinating collection formed by Dempsey Prappas to accompany the previous lot featuring the "H.M.S. Glasgow" vignette error, primarily consisting of two one-frame exhibits (16 pages each), the first contains covers or post cards (14 items) all posted aboard German warships that were involved in this historic December 8, 1914 battle, all were posted prior to the battle while touring the Pacific, two of the covers are from German P.O.W.'s held in Chile after the battle, the second one-fame exhibit consists of 14 covers posted on British warships involved in the battle, while all of the German ships were destroyed, with the exception of the Dresden, only two British ships were lost, among these covers is an exceptional early 1915 cover front addressed to a sailor aboard the H.M.S. Good Hope, which was one of the two ships lost in the battle, bearing a violet boxed "SHIP LOST" handstamp; the two exhibits are accompanied by a few dozen post cards, photographs, maps, duplicate covers and later Falkland Island stamps and FDC's commemorating the battle; all-in-all a marvelous study which took Mr. Prappas years to assemble.
