Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
854 O S.G. #9 imageS.G. #9, 1878 5/- Green, perf. 12 1/2, second state, an exceptionally attractive used example of this scarcest of the Samoa Express stamps, very light central c.d.s and the rim of another at left, unusually well centered, natural s.e at top (this setting was printed in sheets of ten, 5x2, and all stamps have at least one s.e.), extremely fine and seldom offered; 1996 BPA certificate (Scott #8b; $1,250.00). (Image) £1,000

SOLD for $475.00
Closing..Jun-27, 05:00 PM
855 og S.G. #105 var. imageS.G. #105 var., 1914 "G.R.I./3d." surcharge on 25pf Black and red on yellow, double surcharge of "3d." only, an unusual variety caused by an upward shift of the second overprint so the "G.R.I." does not appear on the stamp (a trace of the "G" shows on one perf. tip at top), very well centered and fresh, o.g., h.r., extremely fine; this is a stamp that has been known for a long time, though it is not listed in the major catalogs, Robert Gibbs describes it in his handbook (Gibbs #5C) and states that it is most likely an unofficial printing, in his handbook he lists this as the only known example, subsequently another unused example and a used copy have been reported, but not authenticated, despite the foregoing this is a major rarity that has graced some important collections; signed P.L. Pemberton and accompanied by 1978 BPA and 2001 Robert Gibbs certificates; ex-Major White and Gibbs (Scott #105 var.). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,100.00

856 og S.G. #106 var. imageS.G. #106 var., 1914 "G.R.I./3d." surcharge on 30pf Black and orange on buff, variety 3p instead of 4p, fresh mint example, o.g., very fine; this is a another variety that has been known for some time, but is not listed in the major catalogs, Gibbs lists it (Gibbs #6a) as a possible unofficial printing but notes that one vertical row of this error may have been part of the official printing; signed Tom Allen and David Field (Scott #106 var.). (Image) Est. £750-1,000

SOLD for $1,050.00
Closing..Jun-27, 05:00 PM
857 og S.G, #107 var. imageS.G. #107 var., 1914 "G.R.I./4d." surcharge on 40pf Black and carmine, variety 4p instead of 5p, mint example of a variety similar to the previous, this one formerly listed in Stanley Gibbons, very well centered, fresh, o.g., h.r., extremely fine; because unofficial printings were made in Samoa, varieties, such as this, could have come from them, but Gibbs lists this variety (Gibbs #7a) and notes, as he does with the previous lot, that while they may have come from unofficial printings, there may have been one vertical row of this error from the original printing (it is now impossible to tell); signed H. Bloch and Calves, and accompanied by a 1939 BPA certificate as S.G. 107a when listed (Scott #107 var.). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,050.00
Closing..Jun-27, 05:00 PM
858 og S.G. #108, 108b imageS.G. #108, 108b, 1914 "G.R.I./6d." surcharge on 50pf Black and purple on buff, variety inverted "9" instead of "6", variety is the top stamp in a bottom sheet-margin vertical pair, exceptionally well centered and attractive, a nice way to collect the variety as it shows the comparison of the error numeral with the normal, o.g., lightly hinged on top stamp, bottom stamp n.h., extremely fine; photocopy of a 1987 BPA certificate for a block of six, this being the right pair (Scott #108, 108a; $225.00+). (Image) £230+

SOLD for $375.00
Closing..Jun-27, 05:00 PM
859 O S.G. #111 imageS.G. #111, 1914 "G.R.I./1 Shilling." surcharge on 1M Carmine, an exquisite used example of this rare and key value of the British occupation issues of Samoa, tied to small piece by clear "Apia/(Samoa)/24.9.14" c.d.s., the stamp is exceptionally well centered, and the overprint is clearly printed and sharp, extremely fine; this stamp is the rarest of all of the values of the "G.R.I." surcharges because of an error in the first printing of 100 stamps of this value which read "Shillings" instead of "Shilling", this was corrected on the next two printings of twenty and fifteen respectively, making a total of only 35 stamps printed with the correct surcharge; a wonderful rarity particularly in this premium condition; 1986 Holcombe certificate (Scott #110a; $7,000.00). (Image) £7,000

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Jun-27, 05:00 PM
