Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1961 O 57a var. image#57a var., 1878 "1D." S.G. Type A surcharge, unsevered pair, right stamp with no period after "D", surcharge reading down, used with "Barbadoes/MR 31 78" c.d.s. and mute "bootheel" cancels, strong color, basic stamp was quite well centered, but scissors trimmed top margin similar to the original value label being trimmed away at bottom, whether this was done in manufacture is not known, otherwise very fine; the missing period is not listed in Scott, and while listed in Stanley Gibbons, it is not listed se-tenant in an unsevered pair; clear 1943 RPS certificate; ex-Hurlock (S.G. #86a/b; £2,400+). (Image) 2,250.00+

SOLD for $725.00

1962 O 57a var. image#57a var., 1878 "1D." S.G. Type A surcharge, unsevered pair from adjacent stamps, overprint reading up, used with central "Barbadoes/MR 30 78" c.d.s., overprint quite strongly impressed showing that what looks like a period after "D" is really often a comma, centering varied because of the typical poor centering of the basic stamp, fine-very fine; nearly all known unsevered pairs are from the same basic stamp, it is very unusual to find a pair made from halves of two adjacent stamps; signed H. Bloch and accompanied by a 1959 RPS certificate (S.G. #86b; £1,800+). (Image) 2,250.00+

SOLD for $1,700.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1963 O 57e image#57e, 1878 "1D." S.G. Type A and C surcharges on half 5/- Dull rose, unsevered pair, surcharges reading down, tied to piece along with 4p Scarlet (#47) by indistinct "bootheel" cancel (probably "1"), rather well centered side to side and clear at top, though nibbed perfs. with one pulled perf. above "A" in Barbados, color is good and cancel is unobtrusive so that the two types of surcharges show well, a fine example of this scarcest of the se-tenant type combinations (Scott is incorrect that this variety is imperforate between), we are aware of only one other pair besides this one and the one in the next lot that sold in our 1995 Dempsey J. Prappas Private Collection Sale and had a repaired tear, certainly very few pairs left intact in any condition; 2003 RPS certificate (S.G. #86d; £5,500+). (Image) 8,500.00+

SOLD for $2,500.00

Type A and C surcharges on half 5/- Dull rose, unsevered pair, surcharges reading down, used with "Barbadoes/MR 29 78" c.d.s. one day after issuance, strong color, centered just into frame at top and light thinning at top, still of fine appearance; despite this being the second example of this rare combination it is extremely rare with very few such pairs still intact; clear 1938 RPS certificate (S.G. #86d; £5,500). (Image) 8,500.00

SOLD for $2,200.00

1966 O 58a image#58a, 1878 "1D." S.G. Type B surcharge on half 5/- Dull rose, unsevered pair, surcharge reading down, center vertical perforations are blind so it appears imperforate between, fresh deep color, lightly cancelled with portion of c.d.s., centered just into the design at top, an attractive and fine example of this scarcer type (S.G. #87a; £2,500). (Image) 3,750.00

Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1969 O 59a image#59a, 1878 "1D." S.G. Type C surcharge on half 5/- Dull rose, unsevered pair, surcharge reading down, used example with portions of "Barbadoes/SP 9 1878" double-arc c.d.s., a cancel not often seen on these provisionals, color somewhat faded and small stain in right stamp, otherwise fine and the scarcest of the three types of surcharges; signed Jules Berinchon (S.G. #88a; £3,500). (Image) 3,750.00

Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1970 O 60 var. image#60 var., 1882 1/2p Green, "Hal" of "Halfpenny" omitted, a striking and most unusual unique error caused by a piece of foreign matter (probably piece of paper) coming between the plate and stamp as the duty plate was being printed, confirmed by slight trace (weak because the stamp is used) of an albino impression of the missing letters, faint tiny stain at bottom right, otherwise extremely fine; unlisted by the major catalogs probably because of its unique nature, but this is precisely the way the Fiji 2p George V key plate issue with value tablet omitted was produced, which is listed by Stanley Gibbons; 1948 BPA certificate (signed by Robson Lowe) and a 1990 Brandon certificate (S.G. #90 var.). (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $375.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1971 og S.G. #104d imageS.G. #104d, 1892 "Penny Half" surcharge error on 4p Brown, mint single caused by misalignment of the surcharge on the sheet so that "Penny" belonging to one stamp is positioned with "Half" of the stamp at right, this surcharge is also printed on a diagonal so that there were only one or two stamps in the sheet that had the two words fully placed this way, the rest splitting words, o.g., fresh and very fine; priced in Stanley Gibbons only used because there was one sheet printed with a shifted horizontal surcharge, most of the known stamps from that sheet (50 originally printed) appear to have have been cancelled to order, this mint example is listed but unpriced and much scarcer (Scott #69 var.). (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $375.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1972 O S.G. #104d imageS.G. #104d, 1892 "Penny Half" surcharge error on 4p Brown, used single with central "Barbados/JY 27 92" c.d.s., centered to the top as all are from the single sheet with this with misaligned surcharge, most known copies bear this cancel, very fine; it is believed that less than 20 examples are known of the 50 stamps that were originally printed; 1996 RPS certificate (Scott #69 var.). (Image) S.G. £200

SOLD for $100.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1973 ng 69c var. image#69c var., 1892 "Half Penny" surcharge on 4p Brown, double surcharge in red and black, black without hyphen, unused single, fresh, faint horizontal crease, very fine appearance; it is believed that the red surcharge was printed as a proof and found to be unsatisfactory, it was decided to use black and the stamps printed in red were re-surcharged in black and put in circulation, the variety with both colors missing the hyphen is listed, but equally rare are those missing the hyphen in one color but not the other, the two surcharges being clearly from different positions or settings (this is noticed particularly where the black surcharge is shifted to the left), a rare and desirable variety for the collector of this fascinating issue; 1980 Brandon and 1984 BPA certificates (S.G. #104b var.). (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $375.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM
1974 og 69c var. image#69c var., 1892 "Half Penny" surcharge on 4p Brown, double surcharge in red and black, red without hyphen, in mint horizontal pair se-tenant with normal double surcharge, o.g., light horizontal crease and gum toning largely apparent from the reverse only, very fine appearance; this pair appears to be from the same sheet as the single above and contains a different but similar and rare unlisted variety for the specialist in this issue, being quite likely unique; 1932 RPS certificate; ex-Hurlock (S.G. #104b var.). (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $800.00
Closing..Oct-18, 01:00 PM

1979 nh S.G. #202c imageS.G. #202c, 1920 1/2p Victory, substitute crown in the watermark, a lovely bottom left corner sheet-margin single, the variety clearly showing in the bottom left corner of the stamp, because it has the selvage the slightly different "CA", which was replaced at the same time, shows as well, o.g, n.h., very fine; a rare variety, which is listed by Stanley Gibbons but unpriced, especially in this select condition (Scott #141 var.). (Image) Est. 500-750
