Lombary-Venetia
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2321 c 1e, 5 #1e, 5, 1850 5c Greenish lemon yellow and two 30c Brown, Ty. I, all three the so-called "First Prints" on hand-made paper, the greenish lemon yellow shade of the 5c is the scarcest shade of these fine prints, all with four attractive full margins, showing fresh colors and extraordinarily clear sharp impressions that distinguish these printings, all tied together and to a lovely 1850 folded entire letter by ornamented boxed "Martova/30-8/50" handstamp, a red "P.D." handstamp also ties the 30c value at right, posted to Torino with red date receiving handstamp of that city on the reverse, in addition to the extremely rare 5c Greenish lemon yellow that was used on this cover, making it a major rarity, the rates from Lombardy-Venetia to various Italian cities were complex and this 65c rate in any combination is not listed by Ferchenbauer, normal file folds to cover, not affecting the stamps or markings, very fine and extremely rare cover; signed E(milio) Diena and one other (Ferchenbauer for just the 5c on cover €11,000+). (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $8,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 04:00 PM
2322 c 4b, 4f image#4b, 4f, 1850 15c Red, hand-made paper, Ty.I-IIa-I, combination horizontal strip of three with the scarce Type IIa being the center stamp with Type I on each side, extraordinarily fresh with bright color in the vermilion red shade, large to extremely large margins all around showing a portion of the spacer bar below the left stamp, beautifully cancelled with perfect central "Bergamo/4-6/51" ornamented boxed cancel, on especially clean folded cover to Padova where backstamped, extremely fine; a very scarce type combination on cover with great eye appeal; 2001 Ferchenbauer certificate describing this as an attractive showpiece; ex-Windner and Linz (Ferchenbauer €2,850). (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $1,600.00

2323 O Austia #P5, P6 imageAustria #P5, P6, 1858-59 (1.05S) Blue, Ty. I and (1.05S) Lilac, Ty. II, two of the scarce 1858 Blue newspaper stamps used in combination with one of the 1859 Lilac on the same piece, tied by two strikes of "Venezia/ 14 7" c.d.s. making this a Lombardy-Venetia usage (these stamps without printed denomination were used in both countries), the two blue values have four extra-large margins, the one at right with 7mm sheet margin at right, the other with small facial scuff at bottom, the lilac stamp has three large to extra-large margins, close but well clear at right, in addition this lilac stamp had been previously affixed to another piece, apparently being unused or uncancelled and was removed and affixed to this piece with the original backing still affixed, this unusual reuse perhaps explains the very rare combination of these two different stamps used on the same piece, impressive and attractive piece; despite the minor condition factors, this piece is of the utmost rarity, Ferchenbauer notes in his handbook that only a single item with both blue and lilac stamps used together had previously been known, that piece was a large part of a wrapper with "Stolzenburg 15 8" cancel, which is a city in Austria, such an item used in Lombardy-Venetia is in theory even scarcer as these stamps were valid for use in Austria until 1864, but were valid in Lombardy-Venetia until only July of 1859, making the window for a combined usage a matter of less than six months, this being used right at the end of that period; signed Friedl and A. Diena, accompanied by a 1954 A. Diena certificate. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000
