44 ng 55 image#55, 1c Indigo "August", unused example of this 19th century rarity, well centered being a bit to right as most examples are, lovely characteristic deep "August" color, tiny thin spot at top from one pulled perforation, far less significant flaws than the other examples with faults, which account for over half of the known copies, otherwise very fine; it is believed that a total of only 24 copies exist of the One Cent First design exist; of this total two are cancelled and another is housed in the New York Public Library collection, leaving only 21 uncancelled copies available to collectors; more than half of these are found with faults ranging from serious to minor as is the case with the stamp offered here; 1982 and 1992 PF certificates. 45 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", an incredibly fresh original gum example of this important rarity, possessing a remarkable overall brilliance very few of the other existing examples can boast, with rich and intense color, plus its impression is deeply etched on bright crisp paper, well centered though reperforated at right (not mentioned on 1989 PF certificate), full clean o.g. that has been relatively lightly hinged, a small gum crease at bottom, which are endemic to virtually all of the original gum "August" issues, very fine appearance; only 35 examples of the Five Cent "August" issue are known (two of which are cancelled) and only 16 of the existing population still retain any portion of their original gum; none of the existing original gum examples are completely fault free; 1989 PF certificate; ex-Ballman.
