552 O 1789B image#1789b, 15c John Paul Jones, perforated 12, a seldom seen used example of this modern rarity, marvelously well centered and margined, neat and unobtrusive wavy line machine cancel, extremely fine; the Fifteen Cent John Paul Jones commemorative was issued in 1979, printed by the J.W. Fergusson & Sons Co., and first perforated 12 x 12 by the American Bank Note Company, however the horizontal pins broke only after one day's use and were replaced by perf. 11 pins (creating the 11 x 12 perf. variety) and later the perf. 12 vertical perforating pins were replaced by 11 pins (resulting in the 11 x 11 variety), to date only four sheets of 50 each (200 stamps) have been reported of the perforated 12 variety, making this one of the rarest stamps in United States philately; and even though the Scott catalog editors price both a mint and used example at $3,500.00, examples used contemporaneously are far rarer than mint examples, with probably less than twenty copies discovered to date; accompanied by a 1985 PF certificate, which is a much more desirable dated certificate to have than a more recently issued one, due to the fact that used examples discovered nearly 18 years ago did not have the premium associated to them then as they do now. SOLD for $3,250.00
