1861 First Design "August" Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
51 nh 56 image#56, 3c Brown rose "August", gem mint example, brilliantly fresh and crisp, with rich luxuriant color and a razor-sharp impression on immaculate paper, virtually perfect centering amid unusually wide margins for this value, pristine o.g., never hinged, extremely fine; while Three Cent "August" Issues are offered with some frequency at auction, few can compare to the example offered here in terms of its overall extraordinary condition; 1990 PF certificate. (Image) for hinged 550.00

SOLD for $1,400.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
52 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", an extraordinarily well centered example of this important rarity, being among the finest centered copies recorded, rich and intense color, plus its impression is deeply etched, part o.g., small repair at bottom right not easily detectable, plus the accompanying PSE certificate states the stamp is reperforated at right, an opinion with which we respectfully disagree, nor is it mentioned on the PF certificate which also accompanies, very fine appearance; only 35 examples of the Five Cent "August" issue are known (two of which are cancelled) and only 16 of the existing population still retain any portion of their original gum; none of the existing original gum examples are completely fault free; 1947 PF and 2000 PSE certificates; ex-Neinken. (Image) 15,000.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
53 og 59 image#59, 12c Black "August", part original gum, strikingly intense color and impression on bright paper, small surface scrape at bottom which is almost unnoticeable, otherwise without any of the other major faults which affect the majority of known examples, centered a bit to top as often found, very fine for this great rarity. According to the Philatelic Foundation's records, there are only 15 stamps which have been certified as genuine Twelve Cent "August" issues (one of which has been cancelled "New" in manuscript). There is an additional uncertified example housed in the New York Public Library's collection. Of the 15 stamps available to collectors the vast majority have faults to some degree. The immense rarity of this stamp is underscored by the fact that only one or two Twelve Cent "August" issues make an appearance at auction in a given year - if at all. Signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1976 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Lutwak, Lessin. (Image) 47,500.00

SOLD for $37,500.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
54 og 60 image#60, 24c Dark violet "August", a marvelous mint example of this very rare stamp, certainly among the finest available, as this impressive stamp features a remarkable overall freshness, with strikingly intense "August" color and a highly detailed impression on crisp paper, quite well centered, full clean o.g. which has been relatively lightly hinged, very fine and exceedingly choice; 1975 and 2001 PF certificates; ex-DeSalvo. (Image) 7,500.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
55 og 61 image#61, 30c Red orange "August", full clean original gum, fabulously bright and crisp, featuring spectacular eye-arresting color in a very deep shade, wonderfully well centered and margined, with its perforations clearing the design all around, which is exceedingly difficult to find on this tightly spaced stamp, completely free of any of the flaws which affect most known examples, extremely fine. There are only 29 certified examples of Scott #61 found in the Philatelic Foundation records, plus there is an additional uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. One common characteristic of the Thirty Cent "August" is the presence of creasing due to the brittle nature of the paper. In many cases this creasing is severe and is an accepted condition factor for serious collectors attempting to assemble a complete set of "August" issues. To find one without this characteristic creasing is extraordinary. To then find one still retaining its full original gum and possessing outstanding centering is a virtually unique opportunity. A superlative example of this important rarity. Ranking as one of the very finest Thirty Cent "August" issues in existence. Accompanied by 1970 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Lessin. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $24,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
56 og 62B image#62B, 10c Dark green "August", an uncommonly select mint example of this truly rare and challenging stamp, featuring sumptuously rich color and a razor-sharp impression, while centered just a bit to bottom, this stamp possesses far better centering than usual, full o.g., very fine; a choice copy of a stamp that is terribly difficult to find both sound and still retaining its original gum; 1998 PF certificate. (Image) 7,250.00

SOLD for $4,250.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
1861-1866 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
57 ng 64 image#64, 3c Pink, a magnificently centered unused example of this very rare and often misidentified stamp, possessing absolutely perfect centering amid uncharacteristically large margins, and just as impressive is this stamp's spectacularly bright and unmistakable pink color, with a strong impression to match on wonderfully fresh paper, fully intact and even perforations all around, extremely fine; a gem unused 1861 Three Cent Pink for the finest collection; 1999 PF certificate. (Image) 3,750.00

SOLD for $3,500.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
58 og 66 image#66, 3c Lake, strong distinctive color and impression, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, centered to top, still fine for this rare trial printing; 1960 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the bottom right stamp. (Image) 2,000.00

SOLD for $900.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
59 ng 67 image#67, 5c Buff, an especially attractive unused example of this very rare stamp, being among the few certified unused Five Cent Buff stamps that is completely fault free, exceptionally well centered for this typically poorly centered stamp, wonderfully rich and vibrant color, strong impression on bright paper, slightly rounded corner perforation at bottom right mentioned for accuracy only, very fine; clear 1974 PF certificate. (Image) 9,500.00

SOLD for $1,900.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
60 O 69 image#69, 12c Black, an especially pretty used single, exceptionally well centered within very large margins, strong prooflike color and impression on bright fresh paper, wonderfully postmarked with a desirable light town c.d.s., an extremely fine used gem; 2003 PF certificate. (Image) 100.00

SOLD for $300.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
