1860-61 Star Dies
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
686 og W18B image#W18B, 1c Blue on white horizontally laid paper, star die, die 12, mint cut square measuring 25x53mm, the unique listing example whose appearance at our June 2000 auction of the fabulous Dr. Jerry Summers collection of mint cut squares resulted in the brand new major listing in the 2001 Scott Catalogue as #W18B, previously it had been sold as a paper variety, however its obvious white horizontally laid paper was so different than any of the other previously listed papers that it deserved separate recognition in the Scott Catalogue, subsequently the 2001 UPSS Catalog of the 19th Century Stamped Envelopes and Wrappers of the United States also listed this as existing only as a cut square, previously an entire wrapper was thought to exist but it is now believed that this is the unique example on this paper, fresh, very fine; 1978 PF certificate; ex-White, Sheriff, Norton, Summers and Floyd (UPSS #41A) (Image) 4,500.00

SOLD for $5,250.00

(Image) 2,400.00

SOLD for $1,900.00
Closing..Dec-13, 09:00 AM
689 og W22 image#W22, 1c Blue on orange wrapper, star die, fresh mint cut square, measuring a nicely balanced 36x35mm, deep blue on a strong horizontally laid orange paper, exceptionally strong embossing giving a highly detailed impression, extremely fine for this rare cut square of which there is believed to be only approximately ten examples known; signed R.A. 690 ogc W22 image#W22, 1c Blue on orange wrapper, star die, die 12, measuring 152x257mm, knife W1A, without watermark, rather attractive example of this incredibly rare wrapper, this being the type on wove paper, intense deep blue color with sharp detailed embossing, mounting flaws including small facial thin at extreme left and small piece missing from the bottom right corner, neither affecting a very large area around the imprint which would produce an extremely fine oversize cut square; signed R.A. Champagne (UPSS #40a). (Image) 7,750.00
