United States Stamps continued...

1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
361 og image#202, 90c Dull carmine special printing, without gum as issued, an extraordinarily choice example of this important United States rarity, which clearly places it among the finest in existence, possessing outstanding centering for this, particularly when compared to other known copies, warm rich color on bright paper, intact perforations, extremely fine; less than 40 copies exist of this value, which is one of the most difficult to find in this premium quality; signed E. Stern and accompanied by 1948, 1969 and 1989 PF certificates; ex-Col. Green, Weill Brothers. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $18,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
362 og image#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, exceptionally well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, wonderfully vivid and intense color that is characteristic only to the genuine Special Printings, completely free of the faults that affect several existing examples, extremely fine for this. An exceptional quality example of this immensely rare stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller collection housed in the New York Public Library). Upon comparison to other known examples, it is evident that the Hinrichs example ranks among the finest available due to its outstanding fault-free condition and its exceptional centering. In fact, we estimate that only nine examples are found in sound condition with centering grading very fine or better. We have had the pleasure of selling the last three comparable quality examples to have come on the auction market over the last three years. In each instance the stamps have realized between $45,000.00 and $52,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, when the stamps cataloged considerably less than its current Scott valuation. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the great United States rarities in outstanding condition. Signed "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1939 APS and 1989 PF certificates. (Image) 55,000.00

SOLD for $42,500.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
363 og image#205C, 5c Gray brown special printing, without gum as issued, wonderfully well centered within large margins, rich luxuriant color in the distinctive gray brown shade attributed only to the Special Printings, prooflike impression on fresh paper, extremely fine. A gem example of this incredibly rare stamp. A total of only 22 different copies have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine Five Cent Garfield Special Printings. Because of the extreme rarity of this stamp, very few collectors will ever have a chance to own a copy of this elusive Special Printing, and fewer still can acquire one in such outstanding quality. Accompanied by a 1959 PF certificate; ex-Engel, Klein. (Image) 40,000.00
