82 O image#19, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 92L4, wide spaced perforations at both top and bottom, and unusually wide margins at sides, absolutely perfectly centered amid these breathtaking margins, sumptuously rich color and a prooflike impression on brilliantly fresh paper, lightly cancelled by a Boston c.d.s., superb. This remarkable gem is the finest recorded single of the rare Type Ia perforated stamp and it is among the very few that exist with the wide spaced perforations. Widely regarded as one of the most famous of all condition rarities in United States philately, this stamp is one of the highlights of the Hinrichs collection. The rarity of any Type Ia stamp (imperforate or perforated) is explained by the fact that they were produced from only 18 of the 20 bottom row positions on the 200-subject sheet. Perforated stamps from Plate 4 are even more challenging given the fact that they are invariably found with poor centering and tightness of margins due to the narrow spaces between the stamps as laid out on the original plates for the imperforate issue. To find one with choice centering, if even with its perforations cutting the design, is quite an accomplishment. However, there exists, for reasons yet to be fully explained by students of the issue, a small number of stamps that were produced where the perforating pins were possibly reset to create more room on the bottom row of the sheet. Examples with these wide spaced perforations are highly prized by collectors as they allow for the entire design to show without being impinged by perforations. Only a small number of such copies exist, and fewer still are found completely sound. None, however, come close to the spectacular quality of the copy offered here. The Scott catalogue notes, as a footnote to its basic listing for the perforated Type Ia, "Copies of this stamp exist with perforations not touching the design at any point. Such copies command very high prices." This statement is confirmed by the fact that each time this incomparable copy has been sold, either at auction or by private treaty, it has always commanded a price in excess of ten times of its then current catalog value. It's last appearance at auction was in the October 1998 sale of the Robert Zoellner collection (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.), where Dr. Hinrichs acquired it, after fierce bidding competition, for $50,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, versus its then current catalog value of $4,000.00. ex-Eno, Zoellner.
