122 O image#36, 12c Black, plate I, a breathtakingly beautiful used example of a stamp that is almost impossible to find in true gem quality, as the narrow spacing between the stamps on the plate did not allow for perforations which were added later, this stamp is the "one-in-a-million" exception to the rule when it comes to centering, as it possesses absolutely perfect centering and its perforations clear the design on all four sides, intensely rich color and an incredibly detailed impression, beautifully postmarked with a blue target cancel confined to the bottom left corner, superb; given the spectacular overall gem qualities that this stamp boasts, we cannot imagine that a finer example exists; 1988 PF certificate. (Image) 305.00

SOLD for $2,200.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM

127 O image#38, 30c Orange, a fabulous used example that is, without question, the finest used Thirty Cent Orange 1857 Issue in existence, and may well be the most important condition rarity known from all the values from this series, as each and every aspect of this stamp is truly breathtaking, possessing absolutely perfect centering amid the most immense margins imaginable (both at sides and top and bottom), plus this stamp boasts an overall freshness and crispness which belies its age, as its color is spectacularly rich and radiant, totally unaffected by oxidization as so often found on this value, its impression is unusually strong as well on immaculate paper, a perfectly struck large Boston "Paid" in grid postmark further contributes to this stamp's overall eye appeal, simply superb; this incomparable gem realized a record price ($6,750.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium) in its last appearance in auction in 1999, and we fully expect that it will again attract a similarly lofty realization in the Hinrichs auction; 1992 PF certificate. Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
128 O image#39, 90c Blue, a phenomenal used example of this value, which is one of a very few stamps in United States philately that is actually far more rare and valuable in used condition versus mint, with this exciting copy being not only one of a few that is completely sound, but ranks among the very finest in existence, as it is completely free of the myriad of flaws which affect the majority of known used examples, fantastically well centered within exceptionally large margins for this, gloriously rich color in an especially dark shade of blue, with a crisp prooflike impression on bright fresh paper, all marvelously complemented by a neat light strike of a black Philadelphia town c.d.s. (one of the few certified with such a desirable cancel), an extremely fine gem in every regard; an immense condition rarity of extraordinary beauty and eye appeal; according to the Philatelic Foundation records, there are approximately 170 to 180 used examples that have been certified as genuine by their service, and of these only about 25% are sound, of the sound examples only two or three can compare to the overall quality of the stamp offered here; 1980 and 1995 PF certificates; ex-Granzow.
