1863-1865 Nesbitt Issue
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2167 P U48P image#U48P, 2c Black on buff, proof on vertically laid paper, cut square measuring 48x46mm with an additional top portion folded under and cut as a flap would be, extremely strong embossing and highly detailed impression, light creasing in the top right margin and unobtrusive small cavity in the head from a popped out inclusion, extremely fine appearance; this die (UPSS Die 23) is the rarest of the 2c Black Jack dies, cut squares and entires of this die are known on buff and orange diagonally laid paper but none were ever used and they are great rarities; at least as rare are items with impressions of this die on vertically laid paper as is this item, a couple of items are known with margins so large at right (in excess of 10mm) that they must be proofs, we have offered this as a proof by virtue of its vertically laid paper, but Undersander in his Catalog of United States Stamped Envelope Essays and Proofs illustrates this item and discusses the pros and cons of whether it is a proof or cut square (which would be unique on this paper), regardless a immensely rare impression of a rare die.
