V.I." double circle handstamp, Type 20, this very scarce marking is applied to an OHMS cover to Bern, Switzerland and accompanied by "Tortola/V.I./MR ? 18" double circle c.d.s., Type 21, plus "Commissioner's Office/Virgin Islands." violet two-line official cachet, this official usage was not recognized by Switzerland and a 50c Green and red postage due is tied by "Bern/Brief Trager/2. V. 16." c.d.s., vertical fold to cover and some light toning, a fine and very rare usage; less than ten examples of this very scarce official marking are known, then in combination to this less than usual destination and postage due besides makes for a very rare cover indeed; ex-McCann. 2758 c Sieger #22A var. imageSieger #22A, 1928 Return of the America Flight, specially prepared Roessler printed cacheted card for this flight, with three adhesives tied by "Lakehurst, N.J./Oct. 28, 1928" duplex, one is the notorious "Graf/Zeppelin" overprint that Roessler applied to some 1c Green regular issues in disgust because the U.S. Post Office had not appropriately commemorated the Graf Zeppelin's flight to America, his efforts nearly landed him in jail for fraudulently issuing a "U.S." postage stamp, purple flight cachet, Friedrichshafen transit and Stockholm, Sweden bkst. where addressed, very fine; this unauthorized overprint is very scarce used on a flown cover. 2759 c image1937 First Flight Cover intended for the "Hindenburg", this cover has a triple mixed franking of four U.S. adhesives for the first flight San Francisco to Hong Kong on April 21, 1937 by FAM route 14, then Hong Kong Jubilee issue complete with the instructions by the fastest route to Frankfurt, three German adhesives were applied for transit to the United States by registered Zeppelin post to the United States, unfortunately while in transit the "Hindenburg" crashed so all scheduled Zepplin flights to North America were suspended, the German Post Office registered it and sent it by ship, which happened to be the "Queen Mary", cover has all the appropriate cancels and backstamps, blue flight cachet and straight line "S.S. Queen Mary", attractive and very fine; a most unusual cover that was intended for the Zeppelin but interrupted by the crash of the "Hindenburg". (Image) Est. 200-300

2760 c Sieger #454E var. imageSieger #454E var., 1937 First North American Crash Flight of the "Hindenburg" for the return flight, prepared registered cover from Flushing, New York with five United States adhesives for the return trip to Germany, plus two uncancelled German air mails for return to the United States by the next Zeppelin flight, due to the crash of the "Hindenburg" Zeppelin service was halted and the scheduled mail, like this example, were returned to the sender, but unlike most such items this one received a "Return to Sender" label from the New York Post Office, Foreign Section at the Morgan Annex with four line green handstamp "Zeppelin Disaster/Lakewood, N.J. 5-6-'37/Service suspended/indefinately", plus additional "See Washington bulletin/#17163 - April 14, 1937" in manuscript, initialed by postal employees and postmarked on May 6, 1937, the day of the crash (which was at 7:25p.m.), Flushing bkst. of May 7th, very fine; the fast processing of this item after the crash may be the cause for the mistake "Lakewood" instead of "Lakehurst " in the cachet, extremely rare and the only example that we have seen handled in this fashion.
