619 nh 476A image#476A, 30c Orange red, unwatermarked, perforated 10, position 72 from plate no. 6917, extraordinarily bright and fresh, rich luxuriant color and a clean crisp impression on immaculate paper, incredibly well centered for this notoriously difficult issue, with uncharacteristically wide margins all around, pristine o.g., never hinged, an extremely fine gem.The reason for the existence of the Thirty Cent perforated 10 stamp on unwatermarked paper is attributed to a period of transition from single line watermarked paper to unwatermarked paper - at which time there was a similar transition from perf. 10 gauge issues to perf. 11 gauge issues. Official Bureau records do not specifically identify a printing of the Thirty Cent value on unwatermarked paper that was perforated 10. However, in the past 90 years only two panes of 100 each (200 stamps in all) have surfaced - both of which have been certified - clearly attesting to the existence of such a variety. Thus creating one of the rarest stamps in all of United States philately. The first pane that was discovered was a bottom right pane from plate 6917 - the pane from which this particular example was taken. The second discovered pane was a top right pane from plate 6911.It has been well documented that the vast majority of this rarity, from both panes, are found quite off center - often with its perforations touching or cutting into the design. Examples that are simply decently centered are prized by knowledgeable philatelists. However, there are only a small handful of copies that can truly be described as having premium centering, which the example offered here from the Rosenthal collection boasts. In fact, this particular copy is easily among the very finest in existence and the finest we have ever had the pleasure to offer. In our opinion, the Rosenthal copy is superior to the choice example recently sold in a New York City auction (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., The "North Fork" Collection, October 20, 2005) which realized $26,400.00 (including the buyer's premium). Accompanied by a photocopy of a 1972 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the bottom left stamp (Image) for fine $9,000.00

SOLD for $26,000.00
