968 E image30c, 40c, 50c, $1.30 and $1.50 Photographic frame essays for the Second and Third Revenue issues, original photographs of artist's drawings of half of the frame, the 30c being the bottom half and rest being the top half, each with two such halves reduced to stamp size put together to look like a complete frame and mounted on original cards, measuring 73-78x98-103mm, the three low values are nearly completed drawings while the two dollar values are more incomplete drawings, some minor stains and flaws to card as would be typical of working essays used by the designer developing the design, otherwise very fine; quite likely unique; unlisted in Turner. 975 E Turner Essay 108 imageTurner Essay 108, $200.00 "Small Persian Rug" brown red, blue green and black, model essay composed of lathework sections, figures, lettering and vignette pasted on a large card, 117x163mm, also has corners drawn in using ink plus the backgrounds of six wiggly or wavy patterns "painted" in, only three value tablets and no "CC" in the top corners or "$" in front of the bottom numerals of value, signed "Jos. R. Carpenter" in his hand at base, some negligible soiling, very fine; the unique example of this original model essay and arguably the most important of all the revenue essays in light of the fact that it is one of only a couple pieces known actually signed by Carpenter; illustrated in Turner on page 60, ex-Joyce and illustrated on the back cover of that catalog. 980 E image$5.00 Proprietary, detailed pencil artist's drawing, on wove paper, measuring 128x186mm, the frame is very similar to the issued design but varying in small details, no lettering has been incorporated into the top, bottom and side ribbons but with "$5" at top and bottom, it is clear from the detail that the artist was designing the frame, includes a less detailed vignette of Washington that is totally unlike the vignette used, signed with the designer's intitials "J.D.B. 1873" at bottom, two brown spots which are undoubtedly scorch marks from a candle type light table, one with slight break, otherwise very fine and certainly unique; a very rare artist's drawing, very few of which are known for any revenue design; unlisted in Turner.
