134 O 74 image#74, 3c Scarlet, an incredibly rare used example of this trial printing with bold "D" in oval of bars cancel, bright fresh color and clear sharp impression, quite well centered for this, trace of soiling at top right, otherwise very fine. The Three Cent Scarlet, whether mint or used, has always been an exceptionally scarce stamp. Usually it is found without cancel or with four parallel pen strokes thought to be invalidating cancels similar to a specimen overprint, and cancelled thus they are listed as used in Scott. It is well known that these stamps were not regularly used during the normal 1860's of their issuance. However there were a very few stamps that were actually used at a later time. The "D" grid cancel is the killer portion of a duplex from New York's station D post office. It is believed that as mint examples of this stamp were released, John W. Scott, publisher of the Scott Catalog, obtained some copies and actually used them apparently to validate his claim that they were proper for postage. The used stamp offered here is in the rarest of the three states that this stamp is found. It is believed that there are only five examples with this handstamp cancel, with an additional example outside private hands in the Tapling Collection. Of these, most have faults of varying degrees, the example offered here being in far better condition than most. An excellent opportunity to acquire an extraordinarily rare used stamp for the collector who is striving for completeness in his used collection. Accompanied by a 1994 PF certificate; ex-Twigg-Smith, "Ganymede". (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000
