1503 E imageAmerican Bank Note Co. fabulous stamp specimen essay collection, this bank note company in the late 1920's to early 1930's was promoting to various countries around the world its ability to print stamps, to do this it developed seven different designs that were typical of stamps, one of which is an aviation design showing an airplane similar to air posts issued by Latin American countries, which were major customers of the A.B.N. Co., each design is given a denomination and the word "Specimen" is incorporated into the design, this marvelous assemblage contains original proofs in the development of these designs as well as later usages that were made of them by the company, we note seventeen different original die proofs, some of which may be the only ones in private hands, these are on India, either die sunk on cards or on "index" cards with company notes about the die, these original proofs include at least one or more of each of the seven designs, then a promotional book was developed with one of these seven designs being printed as a die proof on each page, three books are present, plus two sets of die proofs taken from booklets, in addition a composite sheet of eight images consisting of four of these designs was developed for salesman's books, there are ten different die proofs on India in different colors, die sunk on cards, as well as five different gummed sheets taken from a color chart that this composite was used for, each of these accompanied by 1989 PF certificates, there is even a full sheet of a plate proof on India on original card backing and two later die proofs in attractive multicolor renditions, one of which has been converted from engraved to typography, condition over all is quite clean and attractive, though the half dozen index card proofs were working items within the company and vary considerably in condition, very fine; this amazing assemblage of rare archival material paints a beautiful picture of the internal workings of the American Bank Note Co., contained here is virtually everything necessary to develop an award-winning gold medal single-frame exhibit of a this very fascinating area of philately.
