579 EDU 467 image#467, 5c Carmine error, single (damaged at right in opening) tied to petite lady's cover by both a flag machine cancel and a handstamped duplex of Portland Maine (duplex added when the small envelope went through the machine incorrectly), May 22, 1917 earliest documented usage, posted to San Francisco, fine appearance; this is truly a remarkable usage, this error, caused by transferring the wrong denomination into three positions of the 2c plate no. 7942, though not caught by the Bureau of Engraving, was quickly recognized by collectors, thus many were saved mint with only a very few being used, mostly philatelicly inspired, in fact any cover is of great rarity with less than 20 covers known; however this cover has all the earmarks of a legitimate usage by someone who did not recognize the error, it is paying the 2c letter rate and certainly the recipient did not recognize the importance as evidenced by the way he opened it, this all coincides with it being the earliest documented usage, apparently used before the error was widely publicized; 1997 PF certificate; ex-"Alpha". (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000

SOLD for $2,400.00
